Reports
background
Before the sixth round of the year in Monaco, there were no changes in the line-up of drivers. As only 20 participants were admitted to the race, the seven slowest were eliminated after training.
training
Since the first qualifying session took place on Thursday in the rain, all drivers achieved their lap times relevant for the grid on Saturday.
Didier Pironi , who had won the Belgian Grand Prix two weeks earlier, secured pole position from Carlos Reutemann and Alan Jones' Williams . Nelson Piquet followed in fourth place in front of Jacques Laffite and Gilles Villeneuve . The two Alfa Romeo factory drivers Patrick Depailler and Bruno Giacomelli formed the fourth row on the grid.
The Renault drivers Jean-Pierre Jabouille and René Arnoux qualified with positions 16 and 20 unusually far behind in the field, as did the reigning world champion Jody Scheckter in the second Ferrari 312T5 , who only achieved 17th place on the grid. With John Watson and Ricardo Zunino , two drivers from former world championship teams were among the seven drivers who failed to qualify.
run
While Pironi took the lead in front of Reutemann, Jones, Laffite, Depailler and Piquet, there was a violent collision in midfield between Derek Daly , Bruno Giacomelli, Alain Prost and Jean-Pierre Jarier in the first corner, from which all four drivers involved were eliminated resulted. Daly had hit Giacomelli's rear end, knocking his car through the air. The other two cars were damaged in the course of this. Shortly afterwards, Jan Lammers collided slightly with one of the vehicles on the track, but was able to continue the race. Nobody got hurt.
Reutemann was already overtaken by Jones during the first lap. He retired on lap 24 due to a differential damage, which meant that Reutemann was back in second place.
It started to rain in the second half of the race. Pironi, who was leading by a clear margin, had an accident on lap 55 on the casino curve. A gearbox failure preceded the accident. Reutemann took over the lead and defended it to the finish. Laffite followed, well behind, in second place, ahead of the safe Piquet in third. All other pilots who were still in the race were already at least one lap behind. Jochen Mass was fourth ahead of Gilles Villeneuve and Emerson Fittipaldi .
