The 1989 Monaco Grand Prix took place on May 7th and was the third race of the 1989 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

Gerhard Berger was absent due to his injuries sustained at the San Marino Grand Prix two weeks earlier. Ferrari decided against a replacement driver and instead competed with just one vehicle.

March launched the new model CG891 for the first time.

training

As in Imola , Ayrton Senna secured pole position again in front of his McLaren team- mate Alain Prost . Behind it followed Thierry Boutsen before Martin Brundle , Nigel Mansell and Derek Warwick .

run

Since Riccardo Patrese could not start his engine in time for the warm-up lap, he had to start the race from the back of the field. After a start error by Derek Warwick, a second warm-up lap was completed and the race distance was shortened by one lap.

Senna led the race from Prost across the board. Mansell and Brundle finished third and fourth on lap 18 after Boutsen had dropped to the bottom of the field. Because Andrea de Cesaris in round 34 after trying the Lotus of Nelson Piquet retired to round, fell back on one of the rear seats and Nigel Mansell, came Stefano Modena to fourth place. When his team-mate Martin Brundle made a pit stop, he achieved third place and ultimately his first podium finish in Formula 1, which in retrospect also turned out to be the Brabham team's last podium finish . Alex Caffi took fourth place ahead of Michele Alboreto and Martin Brundle.
