backgrounds

After the Spanish Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings with six points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 41 points ahead of Valtteri Bottas . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led Ferrari with eight points and Red Bull with 89 points .

At the Monaco Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Soft (yellow), P Zero Supersoft (red), P Zero Ultrasoft (purple), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

In contrast to the other racetracks in the racing calendar, there was only one DRS zone in Monaco, which was on the start-finish straight and remained unchanged compared to the previous year. It started 18 meters after the last curve, the measuring point was 80 meters behind the piscine .

Fernando Alonso did not contest the race because of participating in the Indianapolis 500 . Jenson Button drove for him at McLaren-Honda , it was his first race since the 2016 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix .

Jolyon Palmer (seven), Vettel, Pascal Wehrlein (six each), Daniil Kwjat (five), Nico Hülkenberg , Esteban Ocon (four each), Romain Grosjean , Kevin Magnussen , Sergio Pérez , Carlos Sainz jr. , Stoffel Vandoorne (three each), Bottas, Marcus Ericsson , Hamilton, Felipe Massa , Kimi Räikkönen , (two each) and Max Verstappen (one) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Hamilton (twice), Raikkonen, Button and Vettel (once each), four former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

Race stewards were José Abed (MEX), Eric Barrabino (MON), Tim Mayer (USA), Derek Warwick (GBR).

free training

In the first free practice, Hamilton set the fastest time in 1: 13.425 minutes ahead of Vettel and Verstappen.

In the second free practice Vettel was fastest in 1: 12.720 minutes ahead of Daniel Ricciardo and Raikkonen. The training was interrupted by Lance Stroll after an accident .

In the third free practice session, Vettel set the fastest time in 1: 12.395 minutes ahead of Raikkonen and Bottas. A few minutes before the end of the training session, Ocon hit the lane after a driving error, so the training session was over for him.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Verstappen was fastest. The Sauber pilots, Stroll, Palmer and Ocon, who after his accident in the third free practice session could only intervene in qualifying shortly before the end of the segment, retired.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Raikkonen was fastest. Vandoorne hit the barriers a few seconds before the end of the section, so no improvement was possible for the other drivers. Massa, Hamilton, Magnussen, Hulkenberg and Kwjat were eliminated.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. Räikkönen drove the best time with a lap time of 1: 12.178 minutes ahead of Vettel and Bottas. It was the 17th pole position for Raikkonen in the Formula 1 World Championship and the first since the 2008 French Grand Prix .

Button, who not only took over Alonso's vehicle for the race, but also the number of engine components used so far, was moved back fifteen starting positions after qualifying for the use of the fifth MGU-H and the fifth turbocharger this season. Since the underbody was also changed, Button had to start from the pit lane. Vandoorne has been relegated three places on the grid for causing a collision at the Spanish Grand Prix. Ericsson was moved five places down due to a gearbox change.

run

At the start the order remained largely unchanged. At the end of the first lap, Wehrlein and Button drove to the pits to change tires. Wehrlein was sent back into fast lane immediately before Button , so Button had to brake to avoid a collision. Wehrlein therefore received a five-second time penalty.

Räikkönen meanwhile led before Vettel, Bottas, Verstappen, Ricciardo, Sainz, Pérez, Grosjean, Magnussen and Hülkenberg. The field drew apart relatively quickly, so that the drivers in the leading group were not within immediate striking distance of each other.

On the 16th lap, Hulkenberg retired with a gearbox damage. On the same lap, Pérez changed his tires and his front wing, which he had damaged on the first lap, was also replaced.

In lap 27 Raikkonen ran on the Button and Wehrlein waiting to be lapped. Vettel and Bottas used this to significantly reduce the gap.

The first driver to the top flight changed Verstappen in round 32 Super Soft , Bottas moved one lap later also on Super soft and stopped in front of Verstappen. Another lap later, Raikkonen came to the pits, and he also switched to Supersoft . On laps 34 to 36 Ricciardo drove the fastest laps of the race to date, he switched to Supersoft on lap 38 and stayed ahead of Bottas and Verstappen.

Vettel was now also driving significantly faster than before, on lap 37 he achieved the fastest lap of the race to date. After his pit stop on lap 39, he came back on track in front of Raikkonen.

Ocon suffered a tire damage on lap 39 and had to pit to have another tire change. The cause of the tire damage was the asphalt in the Sainte Devote , which came off at the high track temperature of up to 55 ° Celsius and the strain from the vehicles. Hamilton was the last driver to switch to Supersoft on lap 47 ; he was in seventh place after his pit stop.

On lap 60, Button collided with Wehrlein in the porter while attempting to overtake. Wehrleins Sauber was levered out by touching the buttons on the left front wheel on the right rear wheel and hit the side, with the engine cover first, in the TecPro barrier there. Wehrlein could neither move nor leave the car, which was now upright, and the race management immediately sent the safety car onto the track. Thereupon the sports officials managed to put Wehrlein’s vehicle back on its wheels so that Wehrlein could get out. In addition, Button's suspension broke in the collision and he parked the vehicle in the Nouvelle Chicane run-off zone . Button received a starting place penalty of three places for his next race of the season and two penalty points for causing this collision.

Verstappen, Ocon, Massa and Pérez used the safety car phase to change tires again. On lap 65, Ericsson crashed into the barrier in the Sainte Devote , although the safety car was still on the track , so he was eliminated.

At the end of lap 66 the race was reopened. Pérez overtook Vandoorne in Sainte Devote , who crashed into the lane and was eliminated. Ricciardo had already touched the barriers there before, but he continued and had to defend himself against Bottas, who did not get past.

On lap 72, Pérez attacked in the Rascasse Kwjat, and the vehicles collided. Both continued initially, but Kwjat parked his Toro Rosso a lap later and was eliminated. Pérez suffered a puncture and had to pit. He also received a ten-second time penalty and two penalty points.

Vettel won the race ahead of Raikkonen and Ricciardo. It was Vettel's 45th victory in the Formula 1 World Championship and the first one-two for Ferrari since the 2010 German Grand Prix . In addition, for the first time since the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix, there was no Mercedes driver on the podium. The remaining points were placed by Bottas, Verstappen, Sainz, Hamilton, Grosjean, Massa and Magnussen. Thus, Force India remained without points for the first time in the 2017 season, after both drivers had always scored points in the first five races of the season.

In the drivers 'championship, the top three positions remained unchanged; in the constructors' championship, Ferrari took the lead from Mercedes and Red Bull.
