The 101st Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil is an IndyCar Series race that took place on May 28, 2017 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway , Indiana . It was the sixth race of the 2017 season .

Training for the race began on May 15th and qualifications took place on May 20th and 21st. The Carb Day , traditionally the last day of practice was on 26 May. The Freedom 100 of the Indy Lights took place on the same day .

background

The race was the third and also the last Indianapolis 500 in which the aero kits from the two manufacturers Chevrolet and Honda were used on the Dallara DW12 . From the 2018 season, the IndyCar will switch to a standard kit. In addition, the chassis from the 2016 season were frozen, so the same aero kits were used as in the previous year.

Attendees

Alexander Rossi (here in Goodwood in 2013) started the race as last year's winner.

The field of 21 vehicles in the IndyCar Series has traditionally been expanded to 33 drivers for the Indianapolis 500. A special feature was that with the two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso , an active driver of the Formula 1 world championship took part in the race for the first time since the 1960s . Alonso competed for Andretti Autosport with the support of McLaren and skipped the Monaco Grand Prix on the same day .

Four rookies took part in the event. In addition to Alonso, these were Jack Harvey , Ed Jones and Zach Veach .

Due to an accident in qualifying in which Sébastien Bourdais was injured, the car with starting number 18 was taken over by James Davison for the remainder of the event .

training

Monday 15th May

  • Weather : 28 ° C, sunny

The training started at 12 o'clock with a session for the rookies. The route was then open to all drivers from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Juan Pablo Montoya was the first driver on the track. The first accident occurred at around 4 p.m. Jack Harvey hit the wall at Turn 2 after a technical problem, whereupon he spun. Harvey was unharmed. Just over an hour later, the engine of Graham Rahal's vehicle was damaged , which ended his training day early.

Marco Andretti set the fastest lap time with an average speed of 226.338  miles per hour (364.256 km / h). Tony Kanaan ran 223.554 mph (359.775 km / h) set the fastest lap, which not by using the slipstream was achieved (so-called no-tow lap ).

Tuesday May 16

  • Weather : 30 ° C, sunny and windy

Due to the higher temperatures and the stronger wind, the speeds were a little lower than the day before. Zach Veach and Harvey both completed their rookie training. After Honda was at the top the day before, Chevrolet now occupied the top three positions. Will Power drove the fastest lap of the day at 224.656 mph (361.549 km / h). Ed Carpenter achieved the fastest no-tow lap of the day with 222.842 mph (361.848 km / h).

Wednesday 17th May

  • Weather : 28 ° C, partly cloudy with strong gusts of wind

Gusts of up to 72 km / h meant that only 21 drivers took to the track and only 14 of them drove a timed lap. Therefore, only 408 laps were driven over the entire day. Team Penske did not take part in training, Fernando Alonso was the only Andretti Autosport driver who drove a timed lap. Ed Carpenter was the fastest rider of the day at 222.894 mph (358.713 km / h), which was ridden without a slipstream.

Thursday May 18th

  • Weather : 30 ° C, mostly sunny

For the first time all vehicles drove at least one installation lap , as Buddy Lazier drove his first laps on the track. The first major accident occurred shortly after 1 p.m. when Josef Newgarden lost control of his car at Turn 1 and turned into the SAFER Barrier . The car slid further towards Turn 2, where it again made contact with the wall. Newgarden was unharmed. Sébastien Bourdais had an engine failure later in the session on the back straight. Jay Howard set the fastest lap of the day at 226.744 mph (364.957 km / h). Takuma Satō achieved the fastest no-tow lap with 224.734 mph (361.674 km / h) .

Fast Friday - Friday 19th May

  • Weather : 25 ° C, thunderstorm in the early afternoon

Training started at 12 noon, with a rain front already approaching the track. The vehicles were now on the move with a boost pressure of 140 kPa (instead of the 130 kPa of the first training sessions). Bourdais set the fastest lap at 233.116 mph (375.164 km / h) while Ryan Hunter-Reay set the fastest no-tow lap at 231.273 mph (372.198 km / h) . Harvey's Honda suffered an engine failure after only driving eleven laps. At around 1:30 p.m. the session was interrupted due to a strong thunderstorm. The thunderstorm cell moved relatively quickly over the speedway, so that the track could be opened again at 4:30 p.m. In the remaining time there were two accidents. Spencer Pigot spun into the lane at Turn 2. Zach Veach hit the wall at Turn 1. Both drivers were uninjured, but the vehicles were badly damaged. After completing the training, the draw for the qualification was held in Pagoda Plaza.

qualification

Saturday, May 20th

  • Weather : 27 ° C, heavy rain in the morning and early afternoon, later partly cloudy

The start of the qualification was postponed to 4:01 pm due to the weather. Due to the delay, all drivers only got one qualification attempt. Qualifying was overshadowed by a serious accident at Bourdais. After driving the two fastest laps of the day during the first two flying laps of his attempt, he lost control of his vehicle during the third lap at Turn 2. The Honda began to oversteer, whereupon it tried to get the car under control by counter-steering. The car swerved to the right and hit the SAFER Barrier at an acute angle at a speed of around 227 mph (365 km / h). The vehicle slid along the boundary of the route and got under-air, causing it to overturn once before coming to a standstill about halfway down the back straight. Bourdais was conscious the entire time and was admitted to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital because of his injuries , where multiple pelvic fractures and one hip fracture were noted. He is not expected to contest any more races for the remainder of the season.

Despite the dominance of Honda during practice, Ed Carpenter set the fastest qualifying time in a Chevrolet. He succeeded in an attempt over four laps with an average of 230.468 mph (370.902 km / h).

Qualification positions 10 to 33

  • Weather : 23 ° C, rain in the morning, mostly sunny in the afternoon

The morning warm-up had to be postponed slightly due to rain. After that, however, the track was dry and the qualification could take place as planned. Prior to qualifying, Dale Coyne Racing announced that James Davison would fill in for the injured Bourdais. Since Davison had not driven in the IndyCar Series since 2015 and had not taken the refresher test , he was not allowed to take part in the qualification, placing him in 33rd position (except in the event that further driver changes were made) .

In the qualification, higher speeds were generally reached than the day before, which was due to the lower temperatures. Ryan Hunter-Reay was the fastest rider, with a four-lap average of 231,442 mph (372,470 km / h), nearly a full mile per hour faster than everyone else in the group. There were no major incidents, but some drivers, including Jack Harvey and Charlie Kimball , hit the wall at Turn 2.

Scott Dixon took pole position with a four-lap average of 232.164 mph (373.632 km / h). This was the fastest qualifying time in Indianapolis since Arie Luyendyk's pole position in 1996. Dixon's first of four timed laps was 232,565 mph (374,277 km / h) and the fastest lap since Luyendyk's lap record of 237.498 mph (382.216 km) /H). It was also the third fastest pole position in the history of the Indy 500, behind Scott Braytons in 1996 and Roberto Guerrero in 1992. In addition to Dixon, Ed Carpenter and last year's winner Alexander Rossi qualified for the front row.

At Alonso, who ultimately qualified in fifth place, the engine was changed an hour and a half before the technical inspection, after the engineers had looked at the data again. The team managed to change the engine in the time available, but were only finished a few minutes beforehand. Takuma Satō was very quick during his attempt and was heading to a front row starting position. However, he got more and more trouble so that he touched the SAFER Barrier in Turn 2.

run

Rounds 1-50

The temperatures on race day were slightly above 20 ° C, with cloudy skies. For the first time since 2014, all 33 vehicles took part in the start of the race. Scott Dixon stayed in the lead, while Will Power got off to a very good start, working his way up from ninth to second. But then it was handed back relatively quickly. The first change in leadership came on lap 6 when Tony Kanaan overtook his team-mate Dixon. Fernando Alonso , who got off to a bad start, slowly worked his way forward and reached position 6 on lap 19. On lap 29, Kanaan was the first driver in the lead group to enter the pit lane. After the first lap of pit stops, Ed Carpenter finally led the race. Jay Howard ran out of gas, leaving him several laps behind. Alonso took the lead on lap 37, and was replaced by Alexander Rossi six laps later , before taking the lead again on lap 48.

Rounds 51-100

On lap 53 Jay Howard was overtaken by Ryan Hunter-Reay at Turn 1. Howard went off the racing line and hit the SAFER Barrier with the right side of the car . The car bounced off the wall and back onto the track. Scott Dixon could no longer evade and collided with Howard. Dixon's vehicle was catapulted into the air and landed on the side of the inner lane in turn 2, with the vehicle destroying part of the safety fence. His car rolled over before coming to a stop. The force of the impact tore off almost the entire rear of the vehicle, including the engine. Both drivers were uninjured and were able to leave their vehicles on their own. However, the race was stopped with the red flag in order to be able to carry out repair work on the safety fence. After about 20 minutes the race was resumed under yellow. Hélio Castroneves , who had passed under Dixon while he was in the air and thereby drove onto the meadow during the accident, had to have light repairs carried out on the car, which dropped him back to 22nd place. In the accident, a photographer who had been standing behind the safety fence was slightly injured and was examined at the medical center for safety reasons.

When the race resumed, Alonso continued to lead, ahead of teammates Takuma Satō and Alexander Rossi. After Rossi took the lead on lap 61, Satō took the lead for the first time in the race on lap 65. Two laps later there was the second caution phase of the race. Conor Daly lost control of his vehicle at Turn 3 and collided with the outer wall. While trying to avoid the flying parts, Jack Harvey spun and crashed into the boundary wall on the inside of the track. So both vehicles were out of the race. During the caution period, Castroneves received a drive-through penalty for leaving too early on the previous restart.

During the restart, Rossi passed Sato and took the lead. The next caution phase came shortly afterwards on lap 81, when a winglet came off Marco Andretti's vehicle and fell on the track. Most of the drivers came to the pits. Will Power , Max Chilton and Castroneves stayed outside, however, as they had been to the pits only six laps earlier. During the restart, Chilton took the lead immediately, but on lap 86 the top cars that had stopped earlier were back in front. Power was passed through to the rear, while Castroneves and Chilton were able to stay in the front of the field. On lap 96, Castroneves took the lead after overtaking Hunter-Reay.

Rounds 101-150

Since Castroneves was on a different strategy, he came to the pits on lap 104 and so gave his lead back to Hunter-Reay. A few laps later, most of the field pitted. Hunter-Reay then led by more than three seconds over his teammate Rossi. At this point, Alonso, Castroneves and Power were the other drivers in the top 5. There was another yellow phase when Buddy Lazier lost control of his car in Turn 2 and crashed into the boundary wall. During the yellow phase, the race also ended for Sage Karam , who was eliminated with a battery defect. The race was released again on lap 129. Hunter-Reay was ahead of Alonso and Rossi. One lap later, Alonso took the lead again before another caution phase was indicated. Vehicle parts were again on the track. The race was reopened on lap 135. Alonso and Hunter-Reay dueled for the lead before Alonso was able to secure it on lap 136. On the same lap, Hunter-Reay suffered an engine failure on the back straight and had to park his car shortly before the pit entrance. There was another yellow phase and most of the cars in the leading group pitted. Rossi had big problems refueling, which caused him to drop out of the top 20. Several drivers chose not to pits, including Max Chilton, Charlie Kimball , JR Hildebrand , James Davison and Ed Jones . At the restart, Kimball passed Chilton, but the pace car was immediately back on the track as Carpenter lost control and touched the side of Mikhail Aleshin, who was driving next to him . Carpenter damaged the front wing and Aleshin's vehicle suffered damage to the side pod. The race continued on lap 147 and Chilton passed Kimball, taking him back to the lead. Graham Rahal dragged his vehicle into the pits on lap 149 with an impending puncture.

Rounds 151 - 200

When Chilton made his final pit stop on lap 166, James Davison took the lead. With his lead lap , he was the first driver since Tom Sneva in 1980 to start from last place in the Indy 500 and lead one lap. Shortly afterwards, Kimball suffered an engine failure and thus caused another yellow phase. At almost the same time, Zach Veach rolled out on the back straight, which ended his race. Almost the entire field decided to pit. Jones and Castroneves were the first to emerge from the pit lane. Chilton, who had just pitted before, decided to stay out and took the lead again.

The race was restarted with Chilton in the lead. Castroneves was in a duel with Jones and Sato. On lap 179 there was the third engine failure of a vehicle with a Honda engine, this time it was Alonso. Alonso parked his car on the grass along the inside of the track and got out. The audience recognized the performance of the Indianapolis and IndyCar debutante with a standing ovation.

The race was reopened on lap 184. At Turn 1 there was contact between Davison and Oriol Servia , which led to an accident in which Will Power, James Hinchcliffe and Josef Newgarden were also involved. Newgarden was the only one of the five drivers who could then continue the race. However, it was several laps behind after the repair.

Eleven laps before the end, the race was released again, with Chilton ahead of Satō in the lead. On lap 192 Castroneves passed Satō and took second place. In the following lap, Castroneves took the lead. Shortly afterwards, Satō also passed Chilton, another lap later he took the lead again. Three rounds before the end Castroneves tried again to get past Sato, but this failed, which led to a small gap between him and Sato. Although Castroneves came closer again, Satō won the race by a margin of 0.11 seconds over Castroneves and Jones. With Sato, an Asian won the Indianapolis 500 for the first time . It was also the first time since 2011 that the winner had started in one of the front three rows.
