Jay Howard (born February 16, 1981 in Basildon ) is a British racing driver . He became the 2006 Indy Pro Series champion . From 2008 to 2011 as well as 2017 and 2018 he competed in individual races in the IndyCar Series .

Career

Like most motorsport enthusiasts , Howard began his career in karting , where he was active from 1993 to 2002. He also later returned to karting for individual races. After being in the UK in 2002 Formula Ford his first experience in the Winter Series Formula racing had made, he also appeared in the British Formula Ford Junior Championship and was 16th in the overall standings. The following winter the Briton won his first championship with the championship title of the British Formula Renault winter series. He then finished fourth in the Scholarship Class of the British Formula Ford in 2003 .

In 2004 Howard left Europe and moved to North America for the American Formula Ford, in which he competed in two races and won one of them. In 2005 he contested the entire season in the US Formula Ford and won the championship title with nine wins in twelve races. In 2005 he moved to Sam Schmidt Motorsports in the Indy Pro Series . The Briton won two races and won the championship title by a narrow margin over Jonathan Klein . In 2007 he only took part in the first three races of the Indy Pro Series and finished 28th overall at the end of the season.

In 2008 , Howard was signed by Roth Racing for the IndyCar Series and did not have to bring any sponsorship money with him. However, after four races he was replaced by John Andretti . Later in the season he was allowed to participate in another race. In the championship he finished 28th. In 2009 he returned to the Indy Pro Series, which had since been renamed Indy Lights . Starting for the new PBIR team , fourth place was their best result. After five races he was replaced by Pablo Donoso and Richard Philippe , who both had more sponsorship funds, and finished 21st overall at the end of the season. In 2010 he started for Sarah Fisher Racing in five races of the IndyCar Series. He couldn't qualify once and didn't finish in the other races. At the end of the season he finished 31st overall. In 2011 , Howard took part in a number of races for Sam Schmidt Motorsports. He was 40th in the overall ranking.
