John Andretti (born March 12, 1963 in Bethlehem , Pennsylvania , † January 30, 2020 in Mooresville , North Carolina ) was an American racing driver . He started in the ICWS from 1987 to 1993 . From 1993 to 2010 he was active in various NASCAR racing series, mostly in the highest category, the Sprint Cup . Between 2007 and 2011 he took part in a total of ten races in the IndyCar Series .
family
John Andretti came from a well-known American racing family, the Andrettis. His father Aldo is the twin brother of Mario Andretti , his younger brother Adam is also a racing driver by profession. Mario's sons and John's cousins, Michael and Jeff , have now ended their racing careers. Three times, in 1990, 1991 and 1992, four Andrettis - John, Mario, Michael and Jeff - drove in the Indianapolis 500-mile race .
In 2017, John Andretti was diagnosed with colorectal cancer (colon cancer) . After therapy, he announced in March 2019 that he had cancer again. He died on January 30, 2020 of the consequences of the disease.
Monoposto
John Andretti made his debut in the CART series in a monoposto in 1987 . In 1988 he started the Indianapolis 500 mile race for the first time and finished 21st. Andretti contested 74 races in the CART series and made it into the top ten 61 times. He achieved his only victory in 1991 at the Gold Coast Grand Prix in Surfers Paradise . In the same year, with fifth place, he also achieved his best placement at the Indianapolis 500.
Historically, the entry at the Milwaukee Mile was in 1991. In the order Michael, John and Mario, three pilots from a family stood on the podium of the first three. In 1994, he became the first driver to contest the Indianapolis 500 mile race and the Coca-Cola 600 in one day. He finished tenth in Indianapolis and then flew to Charlotte to drive at Lowe's Motor Speedway , where he finished 36th after technical problems.
NASCAR
In 1993 he made his NASCAR debut at North Wilkesboro Speedway. After a few team changes, he joined Mike Kranefuss's team in 1995 . With a Ford Thunderbird , he achieved his first pole position at the Southern 500 and finished in the top ten five times in the championship. In the overall standings, he was 18th. After a fifth place in the Hanes 500 in 1996, he celebrated his first race victory in the 1997 Pepsi 400 in what was then the NASCAR Winston Cup , today's Sprint Cup. In the 1998 season he won his second race at Martinsville Speedway . In 2006, Andretti drove his first and only full season in the NASCAR Busch Series .
Return to the monoposto
In 2007, John Andretti returned to monoposto racing in the Indianapolis 500 mile race. He started for Panther Racing , but had to end the race early after an accident after 95 laps. In 2008 he moved to Roth Racing and drove regularly in the IndyCar Series . He also competed in Indianapolis in 2009 and finished the race for Richard Petty Motorsports in ninth place. In 2010 Andretti took part in two races of the IndyCar Series for Richard Petty / Andretti Autosport , including the Indianapolis 500, and finished 32nd overall at the end of the season. In 2011 , as in the previous year, he competed for Richard Petty / Andretti Autosport at the Indianapolis 500. He finished the race in 22nd place. In 2011 he ended his career.
Sports car racing
Since the late 1980s, John Andretti also drove regularly in sports car races. He competed in the IMSA GTP series and drove the BMW M12 there. In 1988 he shared a works Porsche 962 with his uncle Mario and cousin Michael at the Le Mans 24-hour race and finished sixth in the overall standings. His greatest success was the overall victory at the Daytona 24-hour race in 1989. Again he drove a Porsche 962 and his team partners were Derek Bell and Bob Wollek .
