Worth mentioning
- The Formula 1 world champion of the previous season Nigel Mansell became champion in his first year in the CART series.
- Willy T. Ribbs' stakes were funded by comedian Bill Cosby .
- The Galles Racing team also had a prominent new partner in Hollywood actor Gene Hackman .
- In Laguna Seca, Dick Simon's team registered six cars for the race, which was a new record for the CART racing series.
- Menard Racing only competed in Indianapolis. The engine used was a version of the Buick V6 developed by the team under the name Menard / Buick.
- Rahal-Hogan Racing had taken over the competitor Truesports before the season . Their own chassis development ( Truesport 92C ) was further developed by R / H and launched under the name Rahal-Hogan RH-001. After Bobby Rahal could not qualify with his car in Indianapolis , the team bought chassis from Lola . After that, the in-house development was only launched sporadically under Mike Groff .
- Eddie Cheever was sacked after six races at Turley Motorsports because the team lacked the money to pay the pilot. Cheever was replaced by Brian Till . Cheever, on the other hand, replaced, after a short interlude in Dick Simon's team, at Budweiser King Roberto Guerrero , with whose performance Budweiser King was not satisfied.
- The only German participant Christian Danner was only used in three races for the financially weak Euromotorsport team. His double point gain at Elkhart Lake is noteworthy as he lost thirty seconds during an unscheduled pit stop during the race due to a technical problem and was unable to change tires. Euromotorsport had no more tires available.
The story of the season
The season started in March in Surfer's Paradise, Australia. Nigel Mansell joined the Newman / Haas team as the reigning Formula 1 world champion, replacing Michael Andretti, who switched to Formula 1 in return for McLaren. Mansell attracted a crowd of press to Australia that the IndyCars only knew from the Indy500 until now. And he did not disappoint the journalists who traveled with him. Mansell took pole position on the street circuit and, despite a penalty stop (which he was able to combine with his regular pit stop), won the race ahead of Penske driver Emerson Fittipaldi. This made him the first driver since Graham Hill in Indianapolis in 1966 to win his debut race. The big question, however, was how the Formula 1 world champion would fare on the oval, which was unknown to him. In Phoenix he was able to prove his skills. He drove fast lap times from the first lap, but had an accident in free practice on the Saturday before the race after being briefly passed out. He spent the night in the hospital and had to skip the race. The Penske drivers dominated on Sunday. However, after Paul Tracy, who was two laps ahead of the runner-up, had an accident and Emerson Fittipaldi drove over wreckage of the Tracy-Penske, which led to his retirement, Nigel Mansell's team-mate Mario Andretti won the race after almost five years without a win. At 53, he is still the oldest IndyCar winner today. Mansell reported back with a pole position on the street circuit in Long Beach, but lost to Paul Tracy, who celebrated his first win, and Bobby Rahal in the race before Emerson Fittipaldi won the Indianapolis 500 in May . Mansell finished third and defended the championship lead that he had regained in Long Beach. Just a week later he won his first oval race in Milwaukee , on the same track that his compatriot Jim Clark won in 1963 . Danny Sullivan then won a failed race in Detroit before the championship turned into a Mansell battle against Penske drivers Fittipaldi and Tracy. Amazingly, Penske dominated the street and city courses on which Mansell was expected, while the Briton won all three remaining oval races. Fittipaldi won in Portland, Tracy afterwards on the airfield runway in Cleveland. A race that was determined by a thrilling duel between Mansell and Fittipaldi for second place. Mansell got the upper hand in the end. After that, Tracy Penske led to a much-acclaimed one-two in his hometown of Toronto, while Mansell won the 500-mile race on the super-fast Michigan Oval and was also victorious a week later on the Short Oval in New Hampshire. Then Tracy won in Elkhart Lake and the former champion Al Unser jr. for Rick Galles on the street circuit in Vancouver. It would be the last win for Rick Galles' team. Emerson Fittipaldi was then harmed with a win in Mid-Ohio. On the one-mile oval in Nazareth, Mansell was able to become champion early. And he showed an impressive race. He fought Paul Tracy down, won the race and, as a novice, the championship as Emerson Fittipaldi was only fifth. Paul Tracy's victory at the season finale in Laguna Seca didn't change that either. Although he had won as many races as Mansell (5), he was still only third in the championship behind the three-time winner Fittipaldi. Tracy's victory in Laguna Seca was also the last for Chevrolet. The American manufacturer had sold its shares in the Ilmor engine manufacturer to Mercedes, which was soon to take over ...
