Jim Crawford (born February 13, 1948 Dunfermline , † August 6, 2002 in Tierra Verde ) was a British racing driver .

Career

Jim Crawford was a mechanic at Chevron when it turned out that during test drives he was faster than the regular drivers who competed for Chevron in Formula Atlantic . Team owner Dick Bennett therefore gave him a works car for the last races of the 1973 season. In 1974 Crawford built his own racing car, with which he narrowly lost the title in the junior formula to John Nicholson . In 1975 he became a test driver at Lotus in Formula 1 . This commitment also earned him two appearances in the world championship. The Lotus 72 , Crawford drove the last upgrade variant "E", but was no longer fully competitive in its sixth season.

He made his Formula 1 debut at the 1975 British Grand Prix at Silverstone . A heavy downpour turned the race into one of the most chaotic in Grand Prix history, marked by many accidents and spinning. Crawford also spun off the track and had to retire early. At the Italian Grand Prix in Monza he reached 13th place in a Ferrari, six laps behind the winner Clay Regazzoni . This ended Crawford's Formula 1 career.

There followed changeful and unsuccessful years. Crawford drove again in Formula Atlantic, 1978 in Formula 3 , 1981 a full season in the Formula 2 European Championship with Plygrange Racing . With a one year old Toleman TG280 Crawford finished fourth and sixth; he finished the championship with four points in 16th place. 1982 he was involved in the Aurora AFX Formula 1 series , where drivers with aged Forme 1 and Formula 2 vehicles competed against each other. The Scot secured the overall ranking in the Formula 2 class.

Crawford went to the United States at the end of 1982 , a decision he should not regret. First the CanAm series was his field of activity, then he switched to the Champ Cars . Between 1985 and 1993 he competed eight times in the Indianapolis 500 miles . In 1988 he even had a real chance of victory until just before the end of the race. Crawford took his Lola - Buick in the 102nd round for the first time the lead and remained until a few laps before reaching the checkered flag in the top group. On lap 195 (the race lasts 200 laps) he had to pit in third place to refuel. Crawford saved sixth place.

Jim Crawford died in Florida in the summer of 2002 after liver failure .
