The 1975 Italian Grand Prix took place on September 7th at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza and was the thirteenth race of the 1975 Automobile World Championship .

Reports

background

On the weekend after the Austrian Grand Prix , some Formula 1 drivers took part in the Swiss Grand Prix, which was not part of the World Championship and was held in Dijon , France, due to the Swiss motor sports ban . With Clay Regazzoni a Swiss winner of this race was.

Niki Lauda traveled comfortably in the world championship standings to the penultimate world championship round of the season in Monza. He only needed half a point to mathematically secure his first world title. His only remaining competitor, Carlos Reutemann , only had a chance of winning the title if Lauda remained without points in both of the remaining races and he himself could win both races.

The Penske team decided not to participate after the death of regular driver Mark Donohue . The Surtees team did not start either. Frank Williams rented the second car of his team to the Italian debutant Renzo Zorzi . At Copersucar , Arturo Merzario represented the team boss and regular driver Wilson Fittipaldi and thus also got the opportunity to take part in his home race. At Team Lotus , Brian Henton was replaced by Jim Crawford , who had already contested the British Grand Prix for the team.

training

The training result corresponded to the wishes of most of the approximately 200,000 spectators, among whom were not only locals but also numerous fans from nearby Switzerland and Austria: The two Ferraris qualified for the front row, with Niki Lauda taking his eighth pole position of the year .

The reigning world champion Emerson Fittipaldi shared the second row with Tyrrell pilot Jody Scheckter . This was followed by Fittipaldi's McLaren team- mate Jochen Mass alongside Tony Brise , who had shown a strong training performance with the Hill GH1 . Carlos Reutemann , James Hunt , Vittorio Brambilla and Carlos Pace completed the top ten on the grid.

run

Regazzoni took the lead, but initially could barely break away from his pursuers Lauda, Mass and Scheckter. During the first lap, Scheckter took third place from Mass. When the still tight field approached the first chicane at the beginning of the second lap, Scheckter lost control of his vehicle and triggered a series of collisions that meant the end of the race for Ronnie Peterson , Mario Andretti and Tony Brise. A few other pilots dropped out a little later due to consequential damage, including the German drivers Jochen Mass and Rolf Stommelen .

Unimpressed by this, the two Ferraris continued to lead the field, followed by Reutemann, Fittipaldi, Hunt and Depailler . In the tenth lap, Depailler overtook the Hunt in front of him. Four laps later, Fittipaldi also succeeded against Reutemann.

After Depailler briefly left the track due to a driving mistake, he placed himself back in seventh place behind James Hunt and Tom Pryce . During the following rounds, Hunt and Pryce dueled for fifth place.

In the closing stages, Fittipaldi managed to overtake Lauda and take second place. However, he could no longer prevent Lauda from replacing him as the reigning Formula 1 world champion when the checkered flag fell.
