Reports
background
The Parnelli team did not take part in the Dutch Grand Prix because regular driver Mario Andretti took part in a race in his home country, the USA. The Ensign Racing team , on the other hand, was back at the start and hired Gijs van Lennep to replace the injured Roelof Wunderink . After the private team Harry Stiller Racing left Formula 1, Graham Hill signed its driver Alan Jones as a new second regular driver alongside Tony Brise . The Maki Engineering team appeared at a Grand Prix weekend for the first time after two outings during the 1974 season . The debutant Hiroshi Fushida was reported as a driver.
training
After three wins in a row, Niki Lauda went into the weekend as the clear favorite, which he underpinned by achieving his fourth pole position this season. His team-mate Clay Regazzoni completed the front row. Behind was James Hunt , who had just undercut Jody Scheckter's training time. This was followed by Carlos Reutemann and Emerson Fittipaldi before Tony Brise, who at the wheel of the Hill GH1 again showed a strong performance.
run
It was raining at the beginning of the race. Niki Lauda took advantage of the clear visibility at the front, while Regazzoni found himself after a few meters in third place behind Scheckter and just ahead of Hunt. This was followed by Jochen Mass and Tom Pryce in positions four and five.
As the track gradually dried out, different strategies of the drivers and pit teams could be observed. James Hunt and Jean-Pierre Jarier stopped very early to switch to slicks . This paid off, because after the then leading Lauda had changed his tires later, he only came back on track as third behind the two.
In the 44th lap, Lauda took second place from Jarier after an exciting duel. He spun a lap later due to a tire defect and retired. Meanwhile Lauda shortened the lead of the leader Hunt.
Due to an engine failure, Scheckter lost third place to Regazzoni on lap 68. During the last 15 laps, Lauda battled Hunt for victory. The Brit stayed ahead and won his first Grand Prix. It was also the first and only victory for the Hesketh Racing team .
