Reports
background
19 drivers were registered for the fifth World Championship round of the season.
Since Dan Gurney did not have any current Weslake engines for his Eagle team, Brabham registered a third works car with which the American could take part in the Dutch Grand Prix.
Because Ludovico Scarfiotti died and Brian Redman had not yet recovered from his injuries two weeks after his accident at the Belgian Grand Prix , Cooper entered with just one works car, which was driven by Lucien Bianchi .
training
For the second time in a row, Chris Amon in the Ferrari 312 achieved the fastest training time and thus the pole position. Jochen Rindt and Graham Hill also qualified for the front row. Jack Brabham and Jackie Stewart shared the second row in front of Jacky Ickx in the second Ferrari and the two McLaren of Denis Hulme and Bruce McLaren .
run
The entire weekend was characterized by adverse weather conditions. At the start of the race it was already raining lightly. Jochen Rindt initially took the lead, but was already in third place behind Hill and Stewart at the end of the first lap.
As the rain got heavier, Stewart took the lead in the course of the fourth lap and was able to quickly pull away from Hill, who in turn was harassed by Jean-Pierre Beltoise , who had worked his way forward from the middle of the field during the first laps. On the 23rd lap, however, the Frenchman briefly ran off the track and then had to make a pit stop, which threw him back to seventh place. However, he then overtook Gurney, Ickx and Amon within a short time and was thus back in third place. On lap 50 he finally overtook Hill and took second place.
Hill spun on lap 61, but was initially able to continue the race from fourth place. However, after another spin on lap 81, he had to give up.
Stewart won ahead of Beltoise and thus ensured a Matra double victory, with the customer vehicle in front of the works car. Pedro Rodríguez came third in the BRM and Silvio Moser secured the first championship points of his Formula 1 career in fifth in his privately used Brabham.
