background
Two weeks after the Austrian Grand Prix and four weeks after Niki Lauda's serious accident at the German Grand Prix , the twelfth World Championship round of the season took place in Zandvoort. Lauda, who continued to lead the world championship standings by a clear margin, was meanwhile on the mend. He was allowed to leave the hospital and was slowly preparing for his comeback in his home town of Salzburg . The rapid recovery of his driver and the fact that they were also leading the constructors' world championship prompted Enzo Ferrari to step back into the action and register a car for Clay Regazzoni for the Dutch GP.
McLaren was planning the first use of a new M26 car that weekend to test under racing conditions. James Hunt decided to continue to compete with the mature M23 and left the development work to his teammate Jochen Mass . With the DN8, Shadow also brought a copy of a new car to the racetrack, which was piloted by Tom Pryce , while Jean-Pierre Jarier started with the conventional DN5B .
Surtees regular driver Brett Lunger took a break this weekend and was replaced by guest starter Conny Andersson , who thus came to his first and only Grand Prix competition. In the search for a new Ensign regular driver, the attention of the former Wolf driver Jacky Ickx was discovered and he was hired for the rest of the season. Guy Edwards , who had to retire due to injury, was represented at Hesketh Racing by Rolf Stommelen .
After a break of four races, the HB Bewaking Systems team took part in a Grand Prix for the first time since the Swedish Grand Prix. Larry Perkins was retained as the driver of the team that contested his home race . Another Dutch private team took part in the race weekend under the name F&S Properties. The native debutant Boy Hayje was hired to drive a Penske PC3 he had bought .
Due to legal conflicts with the previous main sponsor Tissot , the RAM Racing team decided not to participate.
training
Ronnie Peterson secured pole position for the first time since the 1974 Argentine Grand Prix and the only time in the 1976 season. James Hunt in the old McLaren followed in front of Tom Pryce in the new Shadow and Austria winner John Watson . Clay Regazzoni and Mario Andretti formed the third row on the grid.
run
Peterson initially took the lead, while Watson was able to oust the Hunt, who started from second place, from second place. Andretti followed before Pryce. Due to handling problems, Peterson was unable to break away from Watson. This then started several overtaking attempts. In the second lap he came off the racing line, which was used by Hunt to get into second place. On the following lap, Peterson finally fell back to third place behind Watson.
On the 18th lap, Regazzoni, who had previously fought his way past Andretti and Pryce, overtook third-placed Peterson. The order then changed only insignificantly over several laps until Watson retired on lap 48 due to a gearbox failure.
Hunt won just ahead of Regazzoni, who had caught up a lot but couldn't get past him. Due to an error in the oil pressure system, Peterson was eliminated in the 53rd lap, so that third place went to Andretti.
