Career

After winning the championship in the Dutch Formula Ford in 1974, Hayje had the opportunity to pursue an international motorsport career. In the same year he drove his first race in the European Formula 5000 in a McLaren M18. The following year Hayje took part in another five races of this series in the service of the Hezemans Racing team, but could not achieve any remarkable results.

1976 Hayje participated in the British Formula 3 series and finished eighth in the championship standings. In addition, he contested three races in European Formula 3 , where he secured a pole position and a podium.

In the same year, Hayjes gained international fame when he contested his first and this year only Formula 1 Grand Prix of the season , the Dutch Grand Prix , in a Penske PC3 . Hayje qualified in 21st place on the grid, but retired shortly before the end of the race due to a defect in the half-wave.

In the following season 1977 Hayje was reported for the defeated Team RAM in a total of six Grand Prix, but could only qualify twice. He was unable to finish the South African Grand Prix due to transmission problems, while at the Belgian Grand Prix he did not cover enough distance to be included in the final standings.

After his short time in Formula 1, Hayje contested eight races in Formula 2 before finally taking part in the Renault Eurocup from 1981 to 1983 , with his best result of the season being fourth in the championship with a total of five wins in 1981.
