The 1977 Japanese Grand Prix took place on October 23 as the 17th and final race of the 1977 Automobile World Championship at Fuji International Speedway .

Reports

background

At the time, the longest Formula 1 season in history with 17 World Cup races ended, as in the previous year, with the Japanese Grand Prix. Since the Copersucar , Williams , Renault and Hesketh teams decided against taking part and March also took part with only one car, all the drivers who had traveled to the race were able to take part in the race for the first time since the US West Grand Prix due to the comparatively small field .

Three local guest starters completed the field. The two vehicles from the manufacturer Kojima , which were driven by Kazuyoshi Hoshino and Noritake Takahara , were fitted with Bridgestone tires. The private team Meiritsu Racing reported a Tyrrell 007 for Kunimitsu Takahashi and completed the last Grand Prix outing for the tire manufacturer Dunlop .

Ligier launched a second JS7 for the first time this season . Jean-Pierre Jarier , who was allowed to drive the car, completed Grand Prix appearances for three different teams during one season.

training

Last year's winner Mario Andretti secured pole position in front of James Hunt . Behind them, the two Brabham works pilots John Watson and Hans-Joachim Stuck formed the second row in front of Jacques Laffite and Jody Scheckter .

run

Hunt took the lead, while Andretti fell back to eighth place after a bad start behind Jody Scheckter, Jochen Mass and Clay Regazzoni as well as Watson, Laffite and Stuck. In the second lap, Andretti collided with Laffite and was eliminated. Shortly afterwards, Hans Binder and Noritake Takahara had an accident while trying to avoid a wheel that had been torn off by Andretti's Lotus 78 .

Due to a late braking maneuver at the end of the start-finish straight, Gilles Villeneuve crashed into the rear of Ronnie Peterson's Tyrrell P34 on lap six . His Ferrari 312T2 overturned over the barrier. Although the Canadian was uninjured, a photographer and a sports attendant who had been in the restricted zone died in the accident.

Meanwhile, Mass and Watson passed Regazzoni and Scheckter and finished second and third. This order changed on lap 29 when Mass retired due to an engine failure and Watson due to a transmission problem. This brought Scheckter back to second place, but was overtaken by Regazzoni five laps later. This was also the victim of engine failure on lap 44. Carlos Reutemann , who had previously overtaken Scheckter, then took second place. Laffite overtook him on lap 48, but retired on the penultimate lap due to lack of fuel, which ultimately brought Reutemann to second place, ahead of Patrick Depailler and Alan Jones . Laffite was ranked fifth ahead of Riccardo Patrese , who scored his first championship point in sixth.

For James Hunt this was the tenth and final Grand Prix victory.
