Reports
background
After the US Grand Prix , Michael Schumacher led the drivers' standings with eight points ahead of Mika Häkkinen and 25 points ahead of David Coulthard . Ferrari led the constructors' championship with ten points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes and with 109 points ahead of Williams-BMW .
With Michael Schumacher and Häkkinen (twice each) two former winners competed for this Grand Prix.
training
In free practice on Friday, Michael Schumacher achieved the fastest lap time ahead of Häkkinen and his team-mate Rubens Barrichello . In Saturday's training, Häkkinen took over the leadership position from Schumacher, who was second ahead of Jenson Button .
Qualifying
In qualifying, Michael Schumacher once again turned the fastest lap, taking pole position in front of the two McLaren drivers Häkkinen and Coulthard.
Warm-up
Michael Schumacher also set the fastest lap in the warm-up on race Sunday, half a second faster than Häkkinen in front of Coulthard.
run
The sky had looked like rain all Sunday morning, but it only dripped a little here and there. The cars were positioned for the start and smoke came out of Häkkinen's McLaren just before the warm-up lap. It looked bad, but the only cause was the overcrowded hydraulic system, which was slightly leaking. The car was still smoking when the cars took their starting positions after the warm-up lap, but when the lights went out, Hakkinen was the quickest to get off the line.
Michael Schumacher got away more slowly and immediately pulled across the track to the right to defend his position in front of Häkkinen. Häkkinen avoided the Ferrari in front of him and took the lead in the first corner, Schumacher was second. Coulthard didn't get off well either and was now on the same level as Barrichello and the quickly started Ralf Schumacher . In the first corner, Coulthard and Ralf Schumacher almost collided and Barrichello had to slow down to avoid a collision. Meanwhile, Button avoided the whole crowd in front of him, and Coulthard was now third, just ahead of Ralf Schumacher, Eddie Irvine behind him fifth and Barrichello sixth. Button was now in seventh position.
A duel began between Häkkinen and Schumacher, who only came closer to each other or separated each other by tenths of a second. It was not until lap six, however, that Häkkinen was able to pull away a little. Up to lap 18 his lead was 2.5 seconds and now the two of them came into traffic that had to be lapped. On the 22nd lap, Häkkinen made his first pit stop, Schumacher took the lead until the next lap, when he pitted for the first time. When the two were outside again, the distance was the same as it had been before.
The conditions were now changing. Rain began to fall on the race course and the track began to become slightly slippery. Suddenly Schumacher started to catch up and on lap 30 Häkkinen had problems lapping de la Rosas Arrows and lost a second, it was Schumacher's turn. The two lapped further, and the gap between the two continued to widen and narrow. Schumacher had a little touch while lapping Zonta in the BAR Honda , but both continued their race.
Then, on lap 37, Häkkinen made his second and final pit stop. Schumacher now saw the chance he had been waiting for, because he had enough fuel for three more laps. Conditions were still tricky and he had traffic ahead but took the risk anyway. On lap 40 he made his last stop and had to avoid Fisichella's spinning Benetton on the way in.
After the race, he said he thought he hadn't done enough. But as he drove down the pit lane, Ross Brawn said it looked good and afterwards it looked very good. This was the best moment in his career.
The time measurement showed that Schumacher and Häkkinen drove equally fast on the last lap before the stop and in the pit lane, but on the first lap after the pit stop Schumacher was 4.5 seconds faster than Häkkinen. It was partly due to the changing conditions during those crucial three laps, partly to the fact that Häkkinen had problems with his new tires. In addition, the Finn couldn't get past de la Rosas Arrows straight away, but it only cost him a few tenths of a second.
When Schumacher came out of the pits, he was four seconds ahead and now the race was almost decided. All he had to do now was get the car to the finish and not make a mistake (like in Indianapolis ). During three laps he kept a tenth of a second away until Häkkinen immediately hit back and caught up. Then there was traffic again, and shortly before the end Schumacher slowed a little and Häkkinen got closer, but was still 1.8 seconds back in the end and Schumacher won, thanks to the set of new tires that the team had picked up in qualifying. as Jean Todt later explained.
This was the first time in 21 years that a Ferrari driver had won the world championship, the first time since Jody Scheckter in 1979 .
The duel at the top overshadowed everything else: Coulthard was third after an uneventful race. Barrichello finished fourth after winning back the lost positions of Irvine and Ralf Schumacher.
Button was an impressive fifth in Williams. After a bad start, he was able to gain positions, sit in front of Irvine at the first pit stop and benefit from a mistake by his team mate Ralf Schumacher on lap 30. He could have finished sixth, but turned on lap 42 when he tried to lap Marc Genés Minardi .
The last place in the points went to Jacques Villeneuve , who could be satisfied with it after a bad race weekend in which the BAR team with tire problems and a weak engine. Zonta finished the race in ninth place. His only incident was the near collision with Michael Schumacher's Ferrari. He left him as much space as possible, he said after the race, but Schumacher got so close to him that they finally touched their wheels.
The two Jaguars crossed the finish line in seventh and eighth, Herbert ahead of Irvine. In the current situation of the team, this could be seen as a good result, but there was a situation during the race in which the two almost collided.
Behind Zonta was Mika Salo in the Sauber and behind him Pedro Diniz , both now regretting their bad positions from qualifying.
De la Rosas Arrows crossed the finish line in twelfth place. He had followed the field by the second pit stop, when the team readjusted the car, after that things went better and in the final laps he was able to overtake Fisichella and Trulli. Jos Verstappen's race ended after nine laps with a technical problem in the transmission.
Trulli was 13th and it wasn't a good day for Jordan . Trulli had opted for a three-stop strategy, but was stopped early by Heinz-Harald Frentzen . Obviously, three stops were not the right decision, as he finished twelve after the first lap and 13th. Frentzen drove in the T-Car, but had to retire after a hydraulic pump problem that damaged his transmission.
If Jordan had a bad day, Benetton's was even worse. Fisichella dropped from twelfth to 20th place on the first lap, his traction control only allowed him to come off the start line gradually, and in the end he crossed the finish line in 14th. Alexander Wurz had spun off the track and was eliminated, also due to a traction control error.
The only other to see the checkered flag was Mazzacane in the Minardi, who was two laps behind in the end. His teammate Gené retired on lap 47 with engine failure. Prost was the only team that couldn't get a driver to the finish line. Jean Alesi had another engine failure and Heidfeld had to retire with a damaged suspension.
