Reports
background
After the Austrian Grand Prix , Michael Schumacher led the drivers' standings with 6 points ahead of David Coulthard and 8 points ahead of Mika Häkkinen . Ferrari led the constructors' championship with 4 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes and with 73 points ahead of Williams-BMW .
Eddie Irvine returned to his Jaguar Cosworth cockpit. The Brit was represented by Luciano Burti in the previous Grand Prix due to illness .
With Schumacher, Häkkinen and Irvine (once each) three former winners competed for this Grand Prix.
training
In free practice on Friday, Schumacher set the fastest lap time ahead of Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Häkkinen. In the free practice on Saturday, Häkkinen took over the leadership position from Schumacher and Coulthard.
Qualifying
In qualifying, which took place under changing weather conditions, Coulthard set the fastest lap and took pole position from Schumacher and Giancarlo Fisichella .
Warm up
Coulthard also achieved the fastest lap in the warm up. Häkkinen was second ahead of Pedro de la Rosa .
run
Neither Coulthard, Schumacher nor Fisichella got off to a good start. Häkkinen took the lead from Coulthard. Schumacher was blocked by the British and switched sides to overtake Coulthard. Fisichella did not expect this action and met Schumacher. Both spun off the track, hit the boundary wall and were eliminated. Jarno Trulli and de la Rosa were behind the two McLaren drivers . Barrichello, who started the race from 18th place, made up eight positions on the first lap and finished in tenth place.
Häkkinen and Coulthard increased their gap to the rest of the field, but battles for position ensued in the middle part of the field as Barrichello and Frentzen were on a two-stop strategy and could gain positions. Barrichello overtook Jacques Villeneuve and Ricardo Zonta on the second lap. Frentzen was already behind them and was able to overtake them a little later. Before Barrichello, Jos Verstappen put Irvine under pressure. Both came off the racing line on the fourth lap and the Ferrari driver was able to pass both of them. At the front, Häkkinen had a one-second advantage over Coulthard and four seconds over Trulli. It was more exciting behind them, however, when Barrichello passed Johnny Herbert and Frentzen passed Irvine and Verstappen on the eighth lap . On the next lap, Barrichello was even able to undercut the lap times of the leading McLaren drivers. On the tenth lap, Frentzen overtook Herbert and took sixth place. Before him, Barrichello began to put pressure on fourth-placed de la Rosa, who was 8.5 seconds behind Häkkinen.
Verstappen overtook Herbert on the twelfth lap. One lap later, the Jaguar driver had to retire due to transmission problems. During this time Barrichello overtook de la Rosa, who was then put under pressure by Frentzen. A few laps later, Barrichello was also able to overtake Trulli and took third place, about 14 seconds behind the leading Häkkinen. Until his pit stop on lap 17, Barrichello was able to further reduce the gap to the McLaren drivers and after his stop fell back to sixth place. Since Frentzen stopped one lap later, he took fifth place a little later. He was then able to catch up with de la Rosa again and overtake him again. At this point, when the clouds were gathering, Häkkinen was about half a minute ahead of Barrichello.
A little later, a former Mercedes employee suddenly appeared next to the track, carrying a banner on which he complained about his former employer. The man also crossed the route and triggered a safety car phase in order to be able to catch him. Since the McLaren drivers had started a new lap at that very moment, they could not pit while the pursuers made their first or second stop. McLaren then decided to pit Häkkinen first and then Coulthard. While Häkkinen kept the lead, Coulthard fell back to the rear of the field. Behind the leading Finn were Trulli, Barrichello, de la Rosa, Frentzen, Villeneuve, Zonta, Salo, Jenson Button and Nick Heidfeld . At the restart, Jean Alesi and Pedro Diniz collided and triggered another safety car phase. Before the race was neutralized, however, Coulthard managed to take over the position behind Salo. Before the restart, Alexander Wurz and Marc Gené dropped out with technical problems. At the restart there was an internal team collision at BAR-Honda : Villeneuve and Zonta collided, but were able to continue. A little later, Coulthard managed to drive past Salo.
Shortly afterwards it started to rain on some parts of the route. Trulli had to pit due to a stop-and-go penalty for overtaking under yellow, and Häkkinen, like some drivers, switched to rain tires. The first four positions were then the drivers who were still on dry tires: Barrichello, Frentzen, Coulthard and Zonta. Häkkinen was fifth, ahead of Salo, Button and de la Rosa. A little later, Zonta also received a stop-and-go penalty for the same reason as Trulli, but he spun before taking the penalty and was eliminated in the 38th lap. Coulthard then decided to make another pit stop. He stayed on dry tires and came back on track ahead of Salo and Button. In the 40th lap, Frentzen and Verstappen were eliminated, so Häkkinen was in second place behind Barrichello. As the Hockenheimring was one of the longest circuits, the situation arose where some parts of the circuit were dry and others were wet. Häkkinen, who was on wet tires, was able to catch up significantly on Barrichello, who had dry tires, on the wet tracks. However, he lost the lead he had achieved on the dry sections. In the 42nd lap there was a shift in the points ranks: Button managed to overtake Salo and take fourth place.
Ultimately, Barrichello won the race ahead of the McLaren duo Häkkinen and Coulthard. It was the first victory for the Ferrari driver, who had previously remained without a win in 123 races. With this, Barrichello set a new record, which he held until the 2009 German Grand Prix , in which Mark Webber won his first race. It was also the first win by a Brazilian since Ayrton Senna's last win at the 1993 Australian Grand Prix . In addition, Barrichello was won by another driver for the sixth time in a row. The other points went to Button, Salo and de la Rosa.
At the awards ceremony, Barrichello, who stood on the podium with a Brazilian flag, was overwhelmed by the emotion of his first win. In a subsequent interview he dedicated this victory to Senna.
In the world championship Schumacher kept the leading position. Häkkinen was able to catch up on Coulthard from the points, but, as he had one less win, stayed in third place behind his team-mate. There was also no shift in the first three positions for the designers.
