run
At the start Barrichello was able to defend his leading position from Frentzen. Coulthard passed his team-mate and took third position. Behind Häkkinen were Jenson Button , Villeneuve, Ralf Schumacher, Michael Schumacher, Jos Verstappen and Irvine. Ralf Schumacher managed to overtake Villeneuve on the second lap.
In the next few laps, the first six drivers managed to break away from the rest of the field. After 20 laps, Verstappen had to give up the race due to an electronic defect. A little later, his team-mate de la Rosa, who had fallen back to last place, suffered the same fate. After Frentzen had completed his pit stop on lap 24, Barrichello led the race ahead of McLaren drivers Coulthard and Häkkinen. In the 28th lap he was informed by his team about problems with his hydraulics. As a result, the Ferrari driver noticed with mistakes and Coulthard was able to catch up with him. A lap later, Coulthard Barrichello managed to overtake at the end of the Hanger straight around the outside of the Stowe .
Coulthard kept the lead until his pit stop and gave the first position again to Barrichello, who was not yet in the pits. After 35 laps the hydraulic problem on Barrichello’s Ferrari was so severe that he had to give up the race. A lap later, his compatriot Ricardo Zonta was eliminated due to a spin. After Barrichello's failure, the lead initially went to his team-mate Michael Schumacher. However, the Ferrari driver had to complete his pit stop a little later and gave the lead to Frentzen. While Coulthard took the lead again after Frentzen's pit stop, Frentzen was unable to stay ahead of Michael Schumacher.
After Nick Heidfeld retired on lap 52 with an engine failure, Frentzen and Villeneuve, who were in the points at the time of their retirement, also retired with technical problems.
