After the Austrian Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings with 31 points ahead of Valtteri Bottas and 71 points ahead of Max Verstappen . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led Ferrari with 135 points and Red Bull Racing with 194 points .

At the British Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Hard (white, compound C1 ), P Zero Medium (yellow, C2 ) and P Zero Soft (red, C3 ), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full for wet conditions -Wets (blue) available.

With Hamilton (five times), Sebastian Vettel (twice) and Kimi Räikkönen (once), three former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

The race stewards were Dennis Carter (GBR), Garry Connelly (AUS), Felix Holter (DEU) and Vitantonio Liuzzi (ITA).

In the first free practice, Pierre Gasly set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 27.173 minutes ahead of Bottas and Verstappen. The training was interrupted after Raikkonen had to park his vehicle because of a technical defect at the edge of the track.

In the second free practice, Bottas set the fastest lap time in 1: 26.732 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Charles Leclerc .

In the third free practice, Leclerc set the fastest time in 1: 25.905 minutes ahead of Vettel and Hamilton.
