The 1984 British Grand Prix took place on July 22nd at the Brands Hatch Circuit and was the tenth race of the 1984 Formula 1 World Championship .
Reports
background
Teo Fabi , who previously competed in CART races in parallel with the Formula 1 and had therefore given his place in the Brabham team to his brother Corrado Fabi on several weekends , made the decision to concentrate exclusively on Formula 1 for the rest of the season.
Stefan Johansson was hired to represent Tyrrell driver Martin Brundle , who had injured both feet two weeks earlier during training for the US Grand Prix . For the first time there were indications that the team was threatened with exclusion from the Formula 1 World Championship due to the use of illegal ballast water tanks. However, since the team saw itself in the right, it was decided to continue participating in the Grand Prix as normal for the time being.
Just like a few months earlier in San Marino , Jo Gartner started as the second driver alongside regular driver Piercarlo Ghinzani for Osella .
training
During the first free practice, Johnny Cecotto had a serious accident in which he broke both legs. He then ended his Formula 1 career.
Nelson Piquet qualified for pole position ahead of the two McLaren of Alain Prost and Niki Lauda . This was followed by Elio de Angelis ago Keke Rosberg , Derek Warwick , Ayrton Senna and Nigel Mansell .
Although Jo Gartner would not have actually qualified as 27th in qualifying, he was allowed to compete in the race. The reason for this exception was the fact that the two Tyrrell pilots only started with reservations.
run
While Piquet was leading the race, an accident occurred in the bottom bend section of the track during the first lap . This was triggered by the attempt Riccardo Patrese , Jacques Laffite to overtake. The Italian spun, whereupon his teammate Eddie Cheever and Stefan Johansson who followed him had to brake hard to avoid a collision. Philippe Alliot , who was immediately behind Johansson, had no chance of reacting in time. The front wheels of his RAM 02 touched the rear wheels of Johansson's Tyrrell 012 , causing Alliot's car to take off and land on Cheever's Alfa Romeo 184T . Jo Gartner was also involved in the accident by crashing into the stacks of tires at the edge of the track while trying to avoid the collision.
Piquet continued to lead Prost, Lauda, Warwick, de Angelis and Senna when Jonathan Palmer had an accident on lap 12 due to a suspension failure. Since the position of the wreck on the edge of the track was classified as dangerous, the race was interrupted to recover the car that had crashed. Shortly before, Prost von Piquet had taken over the helm.
Since the restart was made in the order of the placements in the eleventh round, Piquet started again from first place, but this time could not defend himself against Prost. On lap 29 he was also overtaken by Lauda, which resulted in a McLaren one-two lead. However, this only lasted up to the 38th lap, as Prost was eliminated due to a gearbox damage. With Piquet falling back on lap 67 due to a turbocharger failure, Warwick finished second behind Lauda and ahead of Senna. De Angelis was fourth ahead of the two Ferrari pilots Michele Alboreto and Rene Arnoux . This was helped by the fact that Patrick Tambay , who was previously in fifth place, retired on the penultimate lap due to damage to the turbocharger.
Because of the interruption, the race was ended prematurely after 71 of the planned 75 laps.
