Reports
background
During the approximately one-month break between the Canadian Grand Prix and the tenth round of the championship of the season, which took place in Silverstone again this year in accordance with the annual change with Brands Hatch , there were several changes in the entry list.
The Lotus team presented the new Type 94T , largely developed by Gérard Ducarouge , and immediately equipped both factory drivers with it. The car was the successor to the Lotus 93T , which had previously only been driven by Elio de Angelis and, like the latter, had a Renault turbo engine, which means that the Lotus and Renault teams from then on started with identical units. In Osella also, it was decided to re-equip both regular drivers with identical cars and therefore announced two Osella FA1E with naturally aspirated engines from Alfa Romeo for the race weekend on. The Scuderia Ferrari launched the new 126C3 at the start. Brabham , Alfa Romeo and Toleman had used the break of several weeks to provide their racing cars with some modifications.
The new Spirit Racing team was entered in the entry list for the first time. The Spirit 201C was equipped with a six-cylinder turbo engine from Honda and served as a test object for the Japanese manufacturer, which made its debut in Formula 1 since the 1968 Mexican Grand Prix . The driver was the Swede Stefan Johansson , who had already tried in 1980 in Argentina and Brazil at the wheel of a Shadow DN11 in vain to qualify for a Grand Prix.
In order to be able to keep up with the developments of the competition, McLaren has long been striving to switch to turbo engines. With the support of TAG , Porsche worked on a corresponding engine, which had already been tested on the Porsche test track in Weissach in the run-up to the British Grand Prix , but was judged to be not yet operational.
After a guest start by Jacques Villeneuve , British debutant Kenny Acheson was signed to RAM Racing as the new regular driver for the rest of the season .
training
The practice resulted in a straight front row for Ferrari, with Arnoux taking his third pole position in a row. His team-mate Patrick Tambay followed in front of Alain Prost and Elio de Angelis and the two Brabham of Riccardo Patrese and Nelson Piquet . Eddie Cheever and Manfred Winkelhock formed the third row.
Again Keke Rosberg was the best of the pilots who did not have a turbo engine. His twelfth place again confirmed the tendency that a turbo engine was now necessary in order to be competitive, at least in qualifying.
run
For the last time a British Grand Prix took place on Saturdays on Sundays.
During the first lap, Tambay passed his team-mate Arnoux in the lead. Prost crossed the start-finish line for the first time by a considerable margin in third, ahead of Patrese, Cheever and de Angelis. Cheever and de Angelis had to give up the race after a few kilometers due to technical defects.
Due to the failure of Riccardo Patrese on the ninth lap, Nelson Piquet came fourth ahead of Andrea de Cesaris and Manfred Winkelhock.
In the 14th lap, Prost passed Tambay. Six laps later he took the lead. In the meantime, Arnoux had been relegated to fourth place by Piquet. On lap 31, Tambay also lost his second place to the Brazilian.
During the pit stops, which are now compulsory, there was only a brief change in the positions of the leading group. Nigel Mansell , however, managed to catch up with the two Ferrari drivers who were in third and fourth place in front of him by stopping relatively late. On lap 48 he passed Arnoux. Tambay, however, successfully defended his third place against Mansell. Niki Lauda received the last World Cup point of the day in sixth place.
