Reports
background
On the weekend before the French GP, which took place at an unusually early date this year, the only Formula 1 race of the 1983 season that was not part of the World Championship was held at Brands Hatch , UK . It was also the last race of its kind. World champion Keke Rosberg won ahead of René Arnoux and Alan Jones . Instead of Jones, who was not able to make a definitive Formula 1 comeback despite this third place, Chico Serra returned to the Arrows team for the French Grand Prix .
The RAM Racing team deployed a second car to enable the local Jean-Louis Schlesser to make his Grand Prix debut. However, this failed due to its non-qualification.
training
During the training, the dominance of turbocharged vehicles became very clear. The two Renault drivers Alain Prost and Eddie Cheever qualified for the front row ahead of Riccardo Patrese , René Arnoux, Elio de Angelis and Nelson Piquet .
Niki Lauda achieved twelfth place on the grid as the best driver without a turbo engine.
run
Behind the leading Prost, Patrese, Cheever, Piquet, Arnoux and Patrick Tambay, who started from eleventh place, followed .
On the second lap, Patrese was first overtaken by Cheever and shortly afterwards by Piquet. When the Italian was eliminated on lap 19 due to an engine failure, Tambay moved up to fourth place. On the 18th lap, Piquet passed Cheever into second place.
Since about halfway through the race all teams at the top made a planned pit stop to refuel and change tires, so the ranking was not changed. Prost won ahead of Piquet, Cheever and Tambay. The two Williams drivers Keke Rosberg and Jacques Laffite took fifth and sixth place .
