Raúl de Mesquita Boesel (born December 4, 1957 in Curitiba ) is a former Brazilian automobile racing driver .
Career
Raul Boesel comes from a wealthy family. He originally intended to follow his brother into equestrian sports . He was an extraordinary show jumper. But he began to be interested in motorsport, started karting in 1974 and won the local championship the next year. In 1978 he made his debut in the Brazilian stock car series, in which he finished fourth in the championship in 1979 and was "Rookie of the year".
In 1980 he went to England to compete in the Formula Ford there. He drove for Van Diemen and finished second in the RAC and Townsend Thoresen championships. He won 9 out of 27 races. In 1981 he got promoted to Formula 3 and was third in the English championship with three wins and twelve podium finishes. He drove for Murray Taylor Racing .
In November he tested for McLaren . He made his Formula 1 debut the following year at RAM Racing with a non-competitive March 821 . His best results this year were a ninth place in Long Beach and an eighth place in Zolder . In 1983 he drove his second Formula 1 season in the underfunded Ligier team. At the US Grand Prix in Long Beach, he achieved his best career placement with seventh place.
In 1984 he started in the South American Formula 2 Championship and won a race in Rio de Janeiro .
In 1985 he moved to the US and made his Champ Cars debut for Dick Simon Racing . He became the fastest rookie in an Indianapolis 500 qualification on his first experience on an oval course. His best finish that season was eighth in Elkhart Lake . In 1986 he drove 17 races for Dick Simon Racing and was 13th in the championship. He achieved eight top ten placements. His best results were fifth in each of the 500-mile races in Michigan and Pocono . At the season finale in Miami, he started the race from position two.
In 1987 he moved to the World Sports Car Championship and won the title with Jaguar . He won the races at Jerez , Silverstone , Brands Hatch , the Nürburgring and Spa-Francorchamps . The following year he won along with Martin Brundle and John Nielsen in a Jaguar XJR-9 , the 24 Hours of Daytona . That year he also started the Champ Car series for Shierson . In 1989 he finished third in Indianapolis and in 1990 he moved to Truesports .
In 1991 he drove a Jaguar in the IMSA racing series and came second in the Le Mans 24 Hours . In 1993 he returned to Dick Simon Racing in the Champ Car series and finished fifth overall. He drove at the Champ Cars until 1998 for Team Green , among others , then switched to the Indy Racing League , but soon left and went back to his native Brazil. In 2005 he ended his active racing career.
