In 2008 she was in the final of the Proximus Diamond Games , where she lost to Justine Henin 3: 6 and 3: 6. After a lengthy break from injury and several setbacks, she restarted her career in late summer 2010. She played various ITF tournaments, of which she could win three; with another she was in the final. In 2011/2012 Knapp returned to the WTA Tour . At the tournament in Bogotá she reached the quarter-finals in singles and in doubles together with last year's winner Edina Gallovits-Hall the semi-finals.
In 2013, she celebrated the Fed Cup win with the Italian team with a 4-0 victory in the final over Russia . Knapp contributed a point alongside Flavia Pennetta . In the same year she reached Wimbledon for the only time in her career the round of 16 in singles at a Grand Slam tournament.
In 2014 she won a WTA tournament for the first time . In Tashkent , where she remained without a set loss in the entire tournament, she defeated Bojana Jovanovski in two sets in the final . The second tournament victory on the WTA Tour followed in 2015. At the 2015 Nürnberger Versicherungscup she defeated her compatriot Roberta Vinci , who later became the US Open finalist, in three sets. On August 24, 2015, Knapp achieved 33rd place, her best position in the world rankings . At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , she competed in singles , where she was eliminated in the first round against Lucie Šafářová .
Knapp was no longer in the world rankings due to injury from mid-January 2018 and ended her career in May 2018 due to a persistent knee injury.
