The WTA tournament in Nuremberg (officially: Nürnberger Versicherungscup ) was a tennis tournament of the WTA Tour , which was held in Nuremberg from 2013 to 2019 . The clay court tournament traditionally took place in the week before the start of the French Open . The tournament was held on the grounds of the 1. FC Nürnberg tennis club . The tournament, which replaced the Barcelona tournament in the tour calendar , was sponsored by Nürnberger Versicherung . In February 2019, Nürnberger Versicherung announced that it would end its involvement after the 2019 tournament. After the loss of the main sponsor, the surrender of the WTA tournament license was announced in January 2020 due to financial problems. According to tournament director Sandra Reichel, they tried to keep the tournament in Nuremberg until the very end. Ultimately, it was a "no alternative decision".

The tournament will remain in Germany. A company around the former manager of the Kölner Haie ice hockey club , Oliver Müller, claims to have acquired the license for the women's tournament. It is to be held for the first time in May 2021 at the new location in the Rhineland . Due to unexpected complications with the new licensing company, a serious illness of a member, a staging in 2020 was not possible. Some venues in the region could be considered, but a decision has not yet been made. Insiders expect the tournament to be relocated to Cologne .
