Tamara Zidanšek (born December 26, 1997 in Postojna ) is a Slovenian tennis player .

Career

Zidanšek, who started playing tennis at the age of eight, has already achieved great success as a junior, especially in doubles. In 2015 she won the doubles competition at the renowned Orange Bowl alongside Pranjala Yadlapalli . A year earlier she gained her first experience on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour , where she won her first professional title in Slovenia.

In the following season, Zidanšek was able to win a total of five ITF titles, all on clay court, including her first success at a tournament in the $ 25,000 category in Dobrich . Four more followed in 2016, where she won on hard court for the first time in Pune . Due to her improved position in the world rankings , she was allowed to start in the qualification for the first time at the Australian Open 2017 , but lost, as well as at the French Open and the US Open , in the first round. On the ITF tour she was able to land her first triumph in a tournament of the $ 60,000 category in Bendigo and reached her biggest final to date in Toyota the following week , in which she was defeated by Mihaela Buzărnescu .

After Zidanšek won three more ITF titles at the beginning of 2018, on her debut on the WTA tour in Rabat she won the first victory in the main draw from qualifying against Magda Linette and thus made it into the top 100 of the world rankings. At the WTA Challenger Series she was then able to win her first big title in Bol after another success over Linette in the final. In Moscow she then achieved her first WTA semi-final, in which she had to give up against Anastassija Potapova in the decisive third set. After previously missing six qualifications, she was in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament in New York for the first time, but had no chance there against Kristina Mladenovic . Then she was able to win Tashkent in her first WTA final participation in doubles at the side of Olga Danilović her first title. Due to constant performance, she was able to end the 2018 season for the first time in her career in the top 100 in the world.

In Melbourne, Zidanšek mastered the opening round for the first time after beating Daria Gavrilova in the following year, before losing in round two against the eventual winner Naomi Osaka . Then she was in the semifinals of a WTA tournament on hard court in Hua Hin for the first time and even reached her first WTA final in Nuremberg , in which she was defeated by Julija Putinzewa in three sets. Subsequently, she was able to defend her title in Bol with a two-set success in the final against Sara Sorribes Tormo and achieved her best world ranking position to date in July with 56th place after she also survived the opening round for the first time at Wimbledon . In the further course of the year her results decreased significantly and she could only win one more game in the main draw of a WTA tournament by the end of the season. Nonetheless, she finished confidently in the top 100 in the world this year.

In 2017, Zidanšek was nominated for the first time for the Slovenian Fed Cup team . Since then, she has contested 13 matches in singles and doubles for her country, of which she was able to win six (individual balance 5: 4).
