Magda Linette (born  February 12, 1992 in Poznan ) is a Polish tennis player .

Career

Linette, who started playing tennis at the age of six, won the double competition of the Trofeo Bonfiglio , one of the most important junior tournaments, in 2009 alongside Anna Orlik .

In 2007 she gained her first experience on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour . In 2010 she made her debut on the WTA tour in Warsaw after receiving a wildcard from the organizer for qualification ; there she was eliminated in the second round against Anna Tschakwetadze . By the end of the year she had reached the finals of seven ITF $ 25,000 tournaments, four of which she had won, while maintaining a streak of 19 straight wins.

Now in the top 200 of the tennis world rankings, Linette competed for the first time in the qualification of a Grand Slam tournament at the 2011 French Open , but lost in the second round. Then she mainly played higher endowed ITF tournaments, without being able to repeat the successes of the previous year there. Linette was only able to free herself from her form crisis in 2013 when she successfully qualified for the main draw of a WTA tournament for the first time in Strasbourg and after an opening win over Olga Putschkowa immediately entered the second round, in which she was defeated by the eventual tournament winner Alizé Cornet . She then advanced to the semifinals in Baku , profiting from Ons Jabeur's injury-related abandonment before losing to Shahar Peer in the semifinals . By the end of the year she also achieved three more finals on the ITF tour, of which she won one of the $ 25,000 category in Mumbai .

The year 2014 was mostly mixed for Linette, who was eliminated in the first round of qualifications in Paris , London and New York , before she started another series of twelve matches without defeat in Asia and at a tournament of the WTA Challenger Series in Ningbo after a final victory over Wang Qiang surprisingly won their biggest title by far. Before that she was in Guangzhou in doubles at the side of Alizé Cornet in her first WTA final, in which, however , they had to admit defeat to Chuang Chia-jung and Liang Chen . After two more ITF titles in the $ 25,000 category at the start of the 2015 season, she made it into the top 100 in the world rankings for the first time and thus participated in the main round for the first time at the French Open ; there she was defeated by Flavia Pennetta in three sentences. In New York she was able to celebrate her first victory in the main round of a Grand Slam tournament against Urszula Radwańska before losing to her sister Agnieszka Radwańska in the next round . She then achieved her best result of the season in Tokyo , where she advanced to the individual finals of a WTA tournament for the first time, which she lost to Yanina Wickmayer .

In 2016, after a weak start to the season on hard court in Cagnes-sur-Mer , she won an ITF tournament in the $ 100,000 category. At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the ITF gave her permission to start in the main field of the individual competition, but was clearly defeated there at the start to Anastassija Pavlyuchenkova . By reaching the quarter-finals in Tokyo , she was able to end the year again among the top 100 in the ranking. In 2017 she was able to advance to the third round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at the French Open and only lost there against Elina Switolina . In addition, she achieved in Kuala Lumpur after five defeats at the beginning of the season, her only WTA semifinal participation of the year and moved into the second round in Wuhan towards the end of the season.

The following year, Linette started the third round in Melbourne . She then played mainly smaller WTA tournaments and the qualifying tournaments of larger premier tournaments. But she reached her only final of the year at the WTA Challenger in Bol , where she lost to Tamara Zidanšek in the final . The best result on the WTA tour she achieved once again in Asia, in Nanchang , with the entry into the semi-finals, in which she was defeated by the eventual winner Wang Qiang. After years of stabilizing at the bottom of the top 100, Linette continuously improved its ranking in 2019. After she was in the semi-finals in Hua Hin , she won an ITF tournament in the $ 100,000 category on grass in Manchester and reached the third round for the first time at Wimbledon , in which she was eliminated by Petra Kvitová . Subsequently, she won her second individual title on the WTA tour in the New York Bronx coming from qualifying after she prevailed in the final against Camila Giorgi . A month later she made it to the final in Seoul , in which Karolína Muchová gave her no chance. She then closed the season for the first time among the top 50 in the world.

Before the corona-related end of the 2020 season, she won her second WTA title in Hua Hin by beating Leonie Küng in the final and achieved her best world ranking position so far in the following week with 33rd place.

In 2011 she made her debut for the Polish Fed Cup team in the 1: 2 defeat against Bulgaria . Since then she has contested 22 singles and doubles matches for her country, of which she was able to win 13 (individual balance 9: 8).
