Leonie Küng (born October 21, 2000 ) is a Swiss tennis player .

Career

Leonie Küng grew up with her two years younger sister and her parents, who are farmers and have a veterinary practice, on a horse breeding business in Beringen . She started playing tennis at the age of seven by chance because of a trial offer for tennis lessons at the Beringen tennis club. She played her first tournament when she was nine. In the years 2011 to 2013 she moved her school and training location to Bradenton ( Florida ) in order to be able to take part in other important tournaments there.

At the European Summer Youth Olympic Festival in July / August 2015, she and Simona Waltert represented Switzerland and won the bronze medal.

Today she mainly plays in tournaments on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour , in which she has so far won five tournaments in singles and two in doubles. She won her first title in November 2017 at the $ 15,000 ITF tournament in Oslo . In the individual final she faced her compatriot Simona Waltert, who she defeated 6: 4 and 6: 4. On the same day, she also won her first title in doubles, alongside Shaline-Doreen Pipa .

In April 2017 she made her debut on the WTA Tour when she took part in the double competition at the Ladies Open Biel Bienne alongside Ylena In-Albon . The game was lost against number 2 seeded duo Hsieh Su-wei and Monica Niculescu with 2: 6 and 1: 6. In the individual competition, she received a wildcard for the qualifiers , where she lost her opening game against Lesley Kerkhove in straight sets.

Since Küng already played mostly on the women's tour and less and less in the juniors, she had to go through the qualification at the junior women tournament of the Wimbledon Championships 2018 . She survived this in two games without losing a set, which was the first time she was in the main field of a Grand Slam tournament . After four victories without another set loss, she gave in the semifinals against the seeded ten Chinese Wang Xiyu , although the first time a set, sat down eventually but by and reached the final of the Polish Iga Świątek against which she was covered in two sets.

Küng achieved her greatest success so far on the WTA tour in February 2020. She reached the final of the tournament in Hua Hin , which she lost to Magda Linette 6: 3, 6: 3.
