Iga Świątek (born May 31, 2001 in Warsaw ) is a Polish tennis player .
Career
Iga Świątek whose father Tomasz at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul in the Polish sculls sat, began at the age of six years playing tennis. As a junior, she was able to celebrate her first major triumphs. In 2018 she won the double competition of the French Open junior competition at the side of Catherine McNally after a final success over the Japanese Yūki Naitō and Naho Satō and just under a month later the junior women’s title at Wimbledon after a straight two-set victory over Leonie Küng . In the same year she triumphed with Kaja Juvan together at the Summer Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires in the girls doubles and achieved the quarterfinals in the singles . For her victory there she was nominated for the Piotr Nurowski Prize in 2018 . In 2019 she reached her highest position in the junior tennis world rankings with fifth place .
Świątek made her debut on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour in 2016 and won her first professional title in the same year. In 2017 she won two more ITF tournaments, but due to an injury to her right ankle that required surgery, she had to take a break for the rest of the season from June. She made her comeback seven months later in the Fed Cup for the Polish Fed Cup team against Bulgaria . In the course of 2018, Świątek improved to the top 200 in the world rankings with more than 40 wins in only six competitive defeats and three titles, including her biggest to date in a tournament in the $ 60,000 category in Budapest .
In 2019, Świątek played for the first time the qualification at a Grand Slam tournament at the Australian Open and immediately reached the second round after defeating Ana Bogdan . In Lugano she then advanced to her first final on the WTA tour in her second main field participation , in which she was defeated by Polona Hercog in three sets. At the French Open , Świątek then surprised by moving into the round of 16, but lost there smoothly to Simona Halep , and came into the third round at the Rogers Cup in Montreal as a qualifier after a victory over Caroline Wozniacki . After reaching the second round at the US Open , she ended the season that she closed for the first time among the top 50 in the world.
At the Australian Open 2020 Świątek reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament for the second time, where she was defeated by Anett Kontaveit in three close sets. Before the corona-related end of the season, she achieved her best world ranking position to date with 48th place.
In 2018, Świątek made her debut for the Polish Fed Cup team in a 2-1 win against Turkey . Since then, she has played ten singles and doubles games for her country, of which she has won seven (individual balance 5: 2). In 2016 she won the Junior Fed Cup together with Maja Chwalińska and Stefania Rogozińska-Dzik . In the final, they beat the team from the United States 2-1.
