Career

Radwańska, who was introduced to tennis by her father at the age of five, attracted attention early on when she finished 2007 in first place in the junior world rankings . In addition to winning the title at the youth tournament at Wimbledon , where she was able to prevail in the final against Madison Brengle , she triumphed in three of the four Junior Grand Slam tournaments in doubles in the same year. In Wimbledon she won on grass alongside Anastassija Pavlyuchenkova and at the French Open on clay court and at the US Open together with Ksenija Mileuskaja . In 2006 she won the double tournament of the renowned Orange Bowl together with Sorana Cîrstea .

In 2005 Radwańska made her debut on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour at the age of 14 and won her first professional title in 2006. Shortly afterwards, she took part in a WTA tournament in Warsaw for the first time after receiving a wildcard for the main draw from the organizers . In the first round she was defeated there by Venus Williams . In Istanbul , after surviving the qualification against Maria-Elena Camerin, she won her first victory in a WTA main draw . In 2007 Radwańska reached a quarter-finals in Bangkok for the first time and was again in the finals of an ITF tournament in the $ 50,000 category at the end of the season in Kunming . She also won her first WTA title in doubles in Istanbul with her older sister Agnieszka. At the beginning of 2008 she went to the Australian Open for the first time in the qualification of a women's Grand Slam tournament and was eliminated in the final round. As the winner of the Wimbledon junior tournament in singles and doubles, Radwańska was allowed to take part in the main round in Wimbledon with a wildcard and immediately entered the second round with a victory over Klára Koukalová , in which she was defeated by Serena Williams . She then won her biggest title to date at an ITF tournament in the $ 50,000 category in Vancouver and ended the year with another final at the $ 100,000 tournament in Dubai .

In 2009, after successfully qualifying in the first round in Dubai , Radwańska achieved her only victory to date in an official match over her sister Agnieszka. It was her first success against a player from the top 10 in the world rankings. She then received a wildcard for the Premier Mandatory tournament in Indian Wells , where she beat Svetlana Kuznetsova, another player from the top ten in the world , in the second round and then advanced to the round of 16, where they defeated Caroline Wozniacki had to. At the French Open, she advanced to the side of her sister for the first time in the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam tournament, in which they were eliminated against Peng Shuai and Hsieh Su-wei . After reaching the quarter-finals in Los Angeles , in which she was defeated by Marija Sharapova , Radwańska was listed in the top 100 for the first time. In the opening round of the Australian Open 2010 , she lost to the eventual winner Serena Williams and then had to undergo a complicated operation on the spine that put her out of action for nine months. Radwańska made her comeback on the WTA Tour in qualifying in San Diego , where she clearly failed in the first round. Forced to play her way up again in the ITF tournament rankings due to the crash, she made it to the final at a $ 50,000 tournament in Saint-Raphaël at the end of the year, before winning the title in Ismaning in a tournament of the same category . 2011 Radwańska made among others by the way into the third round of Indian Wells and reaching her first WTA semi-final in Tashkent in the world rankings again a few places, so that it the following year in Melbourne again stood in the peloton and there against Alison Riske after won a match in the main round of a Grand Slam tournament for more than two years.

In the middle of the 2012 season, Radwańska found her form again and reached her first WTA quarter-finals on clay court in Brussels after she won her third win over a top 10 player in the first round with Marion Bartoli . She then celebrated her biggest title to date at an ITF tournament in the $ 75,000 category in Nottingham on grass and then pushed into her first WTA final in 's-Hertogenbosch , which she lost to Nadja Petrowa . On hard court, she reached the quarterfinals in Stanford and Carlsbad and the third round in Cincinnati , in which she was again defeated by Serena Williams. After a first round defeat at the US Open , she continued the WTA Tour with two semi-finals in Tashkent and Guangzhou and came in Tokyo after a victory over Ana Ivanović in the third round, in which she was defeated by Angelique Kerber . In the following week she achieved her best world ranking position so far with 29th place.

In 2013, Radwańska made it to the round of 16 again in Doha and Indian Wells . On the clay court and grass, she could not repeat the results of the previous year, but she reached the round of the last eight again in Stanford and Carlsbad . Although she remained without a single semifinal participation in the season, she ended the year for the second time in a row in the top 50 of the world rankings. Due to a shoulder injury, Radwańska had to cancel her start at the Australian Open 2014 and after her return to the WTA Tour in February looked in vain for her form for the rest of the season. With only three main field wins in WTA tournaments, she fell far behind in the ranking. She achieved her best result when she reached the final of the ITF tournament in the $ 50,000 category in Joué-lès-Tours . At the start of the 2015 season, Radwańska reported back with a quarter-finals in Auckland , then qualified for the main round in Melbourne and was also in the last eight in Monterrey . In Istanbul , Radwańska surprisingly managed to get into her second WTA final in the middle of the season after a three-year break, but she had to admit defeat to Lessja Zurenko in two sets. As a result of this success, she returned to the top 100 in the world, and by the end of the season she had only two more victories in a total of eight tournaments. In 2016, Radwańska suffered an ankle injury in Acapulco and had to skip the clay court season. Until the end of the season she had to struggle with physical problems again and again and ended the season in September, in which she had only one success in the main draw of a WTA tournament.

Since then, Radwańska has been on the ITF Tour almost exclusively and with only moderate success. In 2019 she made it to the finals of a $ 25,000 tournament five times and won two titles. At the Australian Open 2020 she took part again in the qualification of a Grand Slam tournament after a break of more than three years, but failed in the first round.

In 2006 Urszula Radwańska made her debut for the Polish Fed Cup team in a 3-0 win against Portugal . Since then, she has contested 30 singles and doubles for her country, of which she has won 15 (individual balance 12:13).
