Sania Mirza ( Hindi : सानिया मिर्ज़ा , Sāniyā Mirzā ; born November 15, 1986 in Mumbai ) is an Indian tennis player .
Career
At the age of six she started tennis under the guidance of her father, Imran Mirza, who is still taking care of her. Your favorite surface is the hard court.
At the end of 2001 she appeared for the first time in the WTA world rankings (987th place). By the end of 2004 it had improved to position 206 and in January 2006 it was already number 32 in the world. Mirza had her greatest success in a Grand Slam tournament in singles in 2005 at the US Open , when she reached the round of 16. At the end of the season she received from the WTA award Newcomer of the Year .
In her homeland, Mirza quickly gained followers as there are few young and successful Indian athletes. She was repeatedly criticized in public for her clothing that was too revealing for a Muslim woman on the tennis court in the eyes of some religious authorities . In September 2005, a fatwa was even issued by an Islamic scholar.
Mirza has been playing for the Indian Fed Cup team since 2003 ; of her 32 games she was able to make 23 victorious.
In January 2009 she became the first Indian tennis player to win a Grand Slam title. Together with her compatriot Mahesh Bhupathi she won the mixed competition at the Australian Open , they defeated Nathalie Dechy and Andy Ram in straight sets in the final .
At the Commonwealth Games in 2010 she won the silver medal in the individual competition and the bronze medal in the doubles.
At the French Open in 2011 Mirza reached the final alongside Jelena Wesnina , which they lost to Andrea Hlaváčková and Lucie Hradecká 4-6, 3-6. In Wimbledon , Mirza / Wesnina continued their series of successes when they made it into the semi-finals, in which they lost 3: 6, 1: 6 to the number 2 pair Květa Peschke / Katarina Srebotnik . In 2012 they reached the semi-finals in Auckland and Melbourne , and even reached the final in Dubai and Indian Wells . At the French Open in 2012 she again secured the mixed competition with Mahesh Bhupathi and thus her second Grand Slam title.
Her last individual so far, she played in June 2012 at the lawn tournament in Eastbourne , where she failed in the qualification. In contrast, 2013 was extremely successful for her in doubles; She celebrated five tournament victories with various partners. In addition, she was in the semi-finals of the US Open for the first time in 2013 . She repeated this success in 2014; in the mixed competition she even secured her third title with Bruno Soares . In 2014 she won three titles with her new permanent doubles partner Cara Black , including that of the WTA Tour Championships .
On April 13, 2015, Sania Mirza was the first player in her country to be ranked number 1 in the double world rankings. At the side of Martina Hingis , she won a total of three tournaments in the United States in March and April. In July she secured her first Grand Slam title in doubles with Hingis when the two defeated the Russian pairing Jekaterina Makarowa and Jelena Wesnina in three sets at Wimbledon . At the US Open and the following year at the Australian Open , Mirza and Hingis also won the doubles competition. In February 2016, the two celebrated their 13th joint double title within one year in St. Petersburg .
Mirza played her last international tournament so far in October 2017. She is therefore no longer in the world rankings.
Personal
Sania Mirza has been married to the Pakistani cricket player Shoaib Malik since April 12, 2010 . The actual wedding took place in Hyderabad ( India ), followed by further celebrations in Sialkot and Lahore ( Pakistan ). The celebrations and the related preparations in both countries were followed with great interest by the respective local media. This made Mirza the most searched tennis player on Google in 2010 . In October 2018, Mirza and Malik became parents of a son.
A photo of Mirza caused a stir in India in January 2008. A picture taken at the Hopman Cup in Perth shows her bare feet on an Indian flag, which nationalists interpreted as a desecration of a state symbol. However, it was not possible to clarify beyond doubt whether the photograph might have been edited afterwards to give this impression.
