Bethanie Mattek-Sands (born March 23, 1985 in Rochester , Minnesota ) is an American tennis player .

Career

Mattek-Sands started playing tennis at the age of five. The hard court is their preferred terrain. From 2009 to 2011 she played for the US Fed Cup team (5 wins, 6 losses).

She achieved her best placings in the WTA world rankings in 2011 with 30th place in singles and in 2017 with 1st place in doubles. So far she has won 16 double titles on the WTA Tour as well as five singles and three doubles titles at ITF level. In 2012 she won the mixed competition at the Australian Open - the first of four titles in Grand Slam tournaments to date . In 2015, she won the title in the women's doubles at the Australian Open alongside Lucie Šafářová . Mattek-Sands and Šafářová also won the doubles competition at the French Open . In mixed she won the title there with Mike Bryan .

Mattek-Sands started the 2011 season with a success at the Hopman Cup . Together with John Isner , she managed a 2-1 final victory over the Belgian team. On February 13, she celebrated her ninth WTA title in doubles. At the side of Meghann Shaughnessy , she won the final against Vera Dushewina and Yekaterina Makarova at the WTA tournament in Paris . Title number ten followed in May 2012 at the tournament in Brussels alongside doubles specialist Sania Mirza .

Mattek-Sands and Mirza were successful again at the first tournaments of the 2013 season in Brisbane and Dubai . The last joint title with the Indian for the time being followed in Sydney in January 2015 . After that, Lucie Šafářová became Mattek-Sands' new permanent double partner. With her she won four titles this year, including the Grand Slam tournaments of the Australian Open and the French Open .

In July 2016, the total tournament prize money won by Mattek-Sands in professional tennis exceeded the US $ 5 million mark. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , she won the mixed gold medal with Jack Sock . In the final they defeated the pairing Venus Williams and Rajeev Ram 6: 7 3 , 6: 1 and [10: 7]. Her third Grand Slam title she celebrated in September at the US Open on the side of Lucie Safarova with a three-set victory (2: 6, 7: 6 5 , 6: 4) against Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic .

On January 7, 2017, she and Sania Mirza won Brisbane International 6: 2 and 6: 3 against Jekaterina Makarowa and Jelena Wesnina . This success made her number 1 in doubles for the first time on January 9th. At the Australian Open she then won the title for the second time with Lucie Šafářová. Another success of the season followed in April in Charleston . At the French Open she won the title in Roland Garros on Šafářová's side for the second time. In her second round match against Sorana Cîrstea at Wimbledon , she suffered a torn patellar tendon in a slip . She made her comeback almost nine months later at the tournament in Miami . In September 2018, she secured her first title since her injury when she and Jamie Murray won the mixed competition at the US Open .

Personal

On November 29, 2008, Bethanie Mattek married insurance manager Justin Sands in Naples , Florida , and she has had the double name ever since.

Mattek-Sands is known for their penchant for fancy clothes and spectacular hairstyles.
