Jelena Sergejewna Wesnina ( Russian Елена Сергеевна Веснина; born August 1, 1986 in Lviv , Ukrainian SSR ) is a former Russian tennis player . With Ekaterina Makarova she won three Grand Slam titles and in 2016 the gold medal at the Olympic Games .
Career
Wesnina started playing tennis at the age of seven. In 2002 she took part in ITF tournaments for the first time, and in 2003 she was able to celebrate her first two titles in singles and three tournament victories in doubles competitions.
In singles, she moved into the first sixteen of a Grand Slam tournament at the Australian Open in 2006 ; she failed there because of her compatriot Nadja Petrowa . In Wimbledon in 2009 she lost her round of 16 with 1: 6, 3: 6 against Jelena Dementjewa . In October 2009 she reached number 22 in the WTA world rankings , and in July 2013 she improved again by one place to 21st, her best position so far. At Wimbledon , Wesnina achieved her greatest individual success so far in 2016 when she was eliminated in two sets in the semifinals against the eventual winner Serena Williams .
In doubles, Wesnina won the Bell Challenge in Québec in 2005 with Anastassija Rodionowa . The following year, she won the Moorilla Hobart International alongside Jelena Lichowzewa . In 2008, she and her compatriot Dinara Safina secured the title at the Masters tournament in Indian Wells . She repeated this success in 2011 with Sania Mirza , with whom she also won the Charleston clay court tournament .
In mixed , she made it into the final of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in 2011 alongside Mahesh Bhupathi . In the final of Wimbledon the two Jürgen Melzer and Iveta Benešová faced, to whom they lost 3: 6 and 2: 6. In 2012 she was defeated there alongside Leander Paes in the semifinals to Lisa Raymond and Mike Bryan with 3: 6, 7: 5 and 4: 6.
Wesnina has been in the top ten of the double world rankings since June 2011. In 2012 she reached the finals at the tournaments in Dubai , Indian Wells, Madrid and Rome. She also made it into the semifinals of the Australian Open alongside Sania Mirza. In October she won two tournaments in one month with her new doubles partner Yekaterina Makarowa in Beijing and Moscow .
At the beginning of 2013, Wesnina won her first individual title on the WTA Tour at the Hobart tournament . In the final she defeated Mona Barthel 6: 3 and 6: 4. At the Australian Open , she moved back into the round of 16 for the first time since 2006, which she lost 6-1, 6-1 against Wiktoryja Asaranka . In Paris, she succeeded in winning the first title at a Grand Slam tournament alongside Makarova. In the final of the French Open , they defeated the defending champions Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci in straight sets . At the WTA tournament in Eastbourne Wesnina won her second individual title with a final victory over Jamie Hampton ; it was her first title win on turf.
On August 19, 2013 she reached fourth place in the double world rankings, and in February 2014 she improved by one place. In the same month, the total of their tournament prize money exceeded the mark of five million US dollars. At the US Open in 2014 she won her second Grand Slam title with Jekaterina Makarowa, in the final they defeated Martina Hingis and Flavia Pennetta 2: 6, 6: 3 and 6: 2.
In 2016, after losing the final in Roland Garros, the two won the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and the unofficial world championship, the WTA Tour Finals . In the 2017 season she won three titles with Makarova, including the tournament at Wimbledon . In 2018 he won the title in Madrid . On June 11, 2018, the two took the lead in the world rankings for the first time .
