Zina Lynna Garrison (born November 16, 1963 in Houston ) is a former American tennis player .

She won three mixed titles at Grand Slam tournaments and the gold medal in women's doubles at the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988. In addition, she was in the 1990 singles final of Wimbledon .

Career

She started tennis at the age of ten, won her first tournament at twelve, and the national championships for 18-year-olds at 14. She secured the junior title at Wimbledon and the US Open in 1981 and was number 1 in their world rankings.

In 1982 Garrison became a professional player. Right at her first participation in the French Open she reached the quarter-finals, in which she failed at the eventual tournament winner Martina Navrátilová .

In 1983 she made it to the semi-finals of the Australian Open , she finished the year in 10th place in the world rankings .

In 1987 she reached the final in women's doubles at the Australian Open with Lori McNeil , together with Sherwood Stewart she won the mixed competition. The following year she won the mixed title at Wimbledon with him.

With Pam Shriver , she won the gold medal in women's doubles at the Olympic Games for the USA in 1988, and in the final they defeated Jana Novotná and Helena Suková in three sets. In the singles Garrison won the bronze medal after knocking out her doubles partner Pam Shriver in the quarterfinals.

In 1989 she defeated in the quarterfinals of the US Open Chris Evert , who then never competed on the women's tour again (she still had a few Fed Cup appearances). That year, Zina Garrison finished the season in fourth place in the world rankings.

The highlight of her career was her entry into the Wimbledon final in 1990, when she defeated the French Open winner Monica Seles in the quarter-finals and defending champion Steffi Graf in the semi-finals . In the final she was defeated by Martina Navrátilová. In mixed she was able to celebrate her third Grand Slam title together with Rick Leach .

In 1992 she reached the final of the Australian Open in women's doubles again with Mary Joe Fernandez .

In 1993 she founded the Zina Garrison Academy , with which she enables underprivileged children from her hometown of Houston to learn to play tennis.

Zina Garrison ended her professional career in 1996, in which she won 14 singles and 19 doubles. She also played a total of 27 games for the US Fed Cup team from 1984 to 1994 , where she celebrated 22 wins.
