history
The tournament was first held in 1978 in his tennis hall in Filderstadt - Plattenhardt on the initiative of Dieter Fischer, a Swabian drugstore owner and self -made man. The first winner was the then only 15-year-old American Tracy Austin , who initiated her rise to the tennis world class and number 1 with this success. She won the tournament four times in a row, which no other player has since succeeded. In 1979 a men's tournament took place there for the only time, the winner was Wojciech Fibak .
In 1982 Martina Navrátilová won for the first time . With a total of six singles and eight doubles between 1979 and 1992, she is the most successful player of all time at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. Also in 1982, Steffi Graf , at the age of 13, competed for the first time, but lost her opening match against series winner Tracy Austin. Two years later, Graf reached the finals for the first and only time as number 42 in the world rankings ; however, she had to admit defeat to the Swede Catarina Lindqvist 1: 6, 4: 6.
In 2002 Fischer gave up the role of organizer for reasons of age. Porsche took over the tournament after 25 years of sponsorship and has been its organizer since then. In 2006, the venue changed from the tennis facility in the tranquil Filderstadt, which had long since become too small, to the newly built Porsche Arena in Stuttgart .
