Francesca Schiavone [ fɾanˈt͡ʃɛska skjaˈvɔne ] (born June 23, 1980 in Milan ) is a former Italian tennis player . She celebrated her greatest success in 2010 when she won the title at the French Open .

Career

In the singles Schiavone was in 19 finals (three of them in autumn 2005), of which she won eight: 2007 in Bad Gastein , 2009 in Moscow , 2010 in Barcelona and in Paris (Roland Garros), 2012 in Strasbourg , 2013 in Marrakech , 2016 in Rio de Janeiro and in 2017 in Bogotá . In the three other Grand Slam tournaments , she reached at least the quarter-finals - in 2003 and 2010 at the US Open , in 2009 in Wimbledon and in 2011 at the Australian Open . She won seven WTA titles in doubles; In 2008 she and her then partner Casey Dellacqua also reached the final of the French Open , in which they were defeated by Anabel Medina Garrigues / Virginia Ruano Pascual 6: 2, 5: 7 and 4: 6. In the remaining three Grand Slam tournaments, she reached the semi-finals in doubles.

Schiavone was also involved in Italy's first Fed Cup victory . In 2006 she won the competition with her teammates Mara Santangelo , Flavia Pennetta and Roberta Vinci with a 3-2 victory over Belgium . In 2009 and 2010 she was able to repeat the Fed Cup success, each with a final victory over the USA . Your Fed Cup record (debut 2002) shows 27 wins and 22 defeats.

At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , Schiavone also competed for Italy. In the individual she was eliminated in the third round against Vera Swonarjowa (6: 7, 4: 6); in doubles she lost the quarter-finals against Flavia Pennetta's side against the Bondarenko sisters from Ukraine, who were sixth, with 1: 6, 6: 3, 5: 7.

On June 1, 2010, Schiavone became the first Italian since the beginning of the Open Era (1968) to reach the semi-finals of the French Open. After her quarter-final victory against Caroline Wozniacki (6: 2, 6: 3), she benefited from the abandonment of her opponent Jelena Dementjewa after winning the first set . On June 5, 2010 Schiavone was able to win the title in her first Grand Slam final; she defeated Samantha Stosur 6: 4, 7: 6. Her greatest sporting success was also the first title win by an Italian in a Grand Slam tournament.

When she defended her title in Paris in 2011, she only had to admit defeat in the final; the Chinese Li Na was able to prevail in two close sentences.

On February 21, 2016, Schiavone surprisingly won the WTA tournament in Rio de Janeiro after a long dry spell ; they defeated Shelby Rogers 2: 6, 6: 2, 6: 2 in the final and returned to the top 100. In 2017 she was able to win another clay court tournament, this time the WTA tournament in Bogotá. She was allowed to start there thanks to an invitation, as she was no longer classified in the top 150 of the world rankings. With the win she made a jump in the world rankings and qualified directly for the French Open.

On September 5, 2018, she announced the end of her career.
