The Darmstädter Kantorei is an amateur choir from Darmstadt. The history of the choir can be traced back to the year 1874 when the Protestant church choir was founded in Darmstadt .
From 1878 the association was expanded to include a choir school. In the course of the association's history, the name of the association changed from the original church choir in Darmstadt to the church choral society for the city church in Darmstadt . From 1934 on, the city church choir in Darmstadt . Under Cantor Hermann Unger, the town church choir was divided into an Arnold Mendelssohn choir and a Ludwig Hallwachs choir from 1964 . In 1971 these two choirs were finally merged to form the Darmstädter Kantorei.
As the choir of the city church (Darmstadt) , the singers regularly organize the church services in the city church. In addition, the great works of choral music are cultivated.
Concert tours led the choir a. a. already to Alkmaar , Troyes , Chesterfield , Graz , Trondheim , Venice , Valencia and Moscow , to the USA and to Sweden (with concerts in Lund Cathedral and in the Haga-Kyrka in Gothenburg). The highlights of the choir's work were the German premiere of Benjamin Britten's The Company of Heaven in 1996 and the performance of Handel's Messiah in Moscow's Tchaikovsky Hall.
Today the Darmstädter Kantorei consists of the large choir with a focus on the great oratorios of church music literature, the chamber choir with a focus on a cappella music and the Darmstadt singing school with around 120 children and young people in seven different groups. There are regular collaborations with the Darmstadt State Theater. In 2018, the Darmstädter Kantorei participated in the Hessian premiere of Olivier Messiaen's opera “ Saint François d'Assise ”. The work of the choir was documented by recordings for radio and sound carriers.
