Joannette Kruger (born September 3, 1973 in Johannesburg ) is a former South African tennis player .

Career

Joannette Kruger was in the top 100 for the first time in 1993. The following year she reached the third round of the French Open , in which she was defeated by Steffi Graf in a tough match of three. In March 1995 she won her first ITF tournament in Puerto Rico and climbed into the top 50 of the WTA world rankings . In Rome she beat Anke Huber , a top ten player, for the first time, and in Leipzig she also defeated Lindsay Davenport . In 1997 she secured her second individual title in Prague . Shortly afterwards, she achieved her best result in a Grand Slam tournament when she made it to the round of 16 in New York .

In 1998 Kruger moved into the Oklahoma final with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Serena Williams . She celebrated her first success over a top 5 player in Indian Wells when she knocked out Amanda Coetzer in the round of 16. In May 1998 it achieved its best ranking with 21st place. The year 2000 was the best season of her career. She reached three semi-finals, including at the German Open in Berlin, where she defeated number three in the world, Nathalie Tauziat , 6: 2, 6: 0 and in the quarter-finals against Jelena Dementjewa in the third set even a 0: 5- Made up for the deficit. In 2001, Kruger reached the quarter-finals of the Italian Open and the final in Bali for the third time . Then the South African had to take a year off because of a pulled abdominal muscle. In 2003 she dared to make a comeback, but at the end of the season she finally ended her professional career.
