Wera Igorewna Swonarjowa ( Russian Вера Игоревна Звонарёва , English transcription Vera Zvonareva ; born September 7, 1984 in Moscow , Russian SFSR , USSR ) is a Russian tennis player .
Career
She started playing tennis at the age of six and became a professional player in 2000. In 2002 Swonaryova already reached the top 50 of the WTA ranking list in singles, in 2003 she rose to the top 20 , in 2004 she came in ninth place for the first time in the top ten . She reached her first final in a Grand Slam tournament in 2010 at the Lawn Tennis Championships at Wimbledon, where she lost 3: 6, 2: 6 to defending champion Serena Williams . For the Russian Fed Cup team , she played ten games up to 2011, of which she was able to win eight.
Swonaryova has won twelve WTA titles in singles, two Grand Slam titles in doubles ( US Open 2006 and Australian Open 2012 ), six WTA doubles titles and three ITF singles titles in her career so far . In addition, she entered the list of winners in mixed doubles at the US Open in 2004 and Wimbledon in 2006 .
In 2008 she advanced to the final in Doha , in which she was defeated by her compatriot Marija Sharapova with 1: 6, 6: 2 and 0: 6. She also reached the Hobart and Charleston finals. At the Olympic Games in Beijing , she won the bronze medal. At the tournament in Charleston she came with wins over Marion Bartoli , Jelena Janković and Jelena Dementjewa to the final, which she lost 4: 6, 6: 3 and 3: 6 against Serena Williams .
Swonaryova won the first tournament of the Masters Series in Indian Wells in 2009 , where she defeated defending champion Ana Ivanović 7: 6 and 6: 2. At the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, she injured her right ankle in the game against Virginie Razzano and had to take a month off. She missed the French Open and finished the year in 9th place in the world rankings. In November 2009, her injury was finally treated with surgery.
Her greatest successes of the season in 2010 were reaching the finals of Wimbledon (loss to Serena Williams in two straight sets) and the US Open, where she was also clearly defeated by Kim Clijsters . She was also in the final of Montreal . At the Australian Open, she lost in the round of 16 to Vikoryja Asaranka in three sets. In Charleston , she lost the final against Samantha Stosur and again against Asaranka in the quarterfinals of Dubai . In Pattaya , however, she defended her title with a clear final victory over local hero Tamarine Tanasugarn . At the end of the year Swonaryova was second in the world.
After returning to the semi-finals in Melbourne, she won her eleventh WTA individual title in February 2011. In the final in Doha she defeated world number one Caroline Wozniacki 6: 4 and 6: 4. In Roland Garros she reached the round of 16. At Wimbledon, the end came in round three this time, where she was number 2 on the seeding list Zwetana Pironkowa 2: 6, 3: 6 - last year she made it into the final with a smooth victory over the Bulgarian. At the hard court tournament in Baku (Azerbaijan), she secured her 12th WTA title with a two-set win over Xenija Perwak . She also reached the final in Carlsbad with victories over Lisicki and Ivanovic, but was again defeated by Agnieszka Radwańska, who was seeded 3 in the round of 16 in Toronto, just like a week before .
At the tournament in Sydney at the beginning of 2012 Swonaryova lost her first round match against Svetlana Kuznetsova. At the Australian Open , she was eliminated in the third round against Yekaterina Makarova , but in the doubles competition she won the title on the side of Kuznetsova. In the following tournaments she suffered early defeats. Only in Charleston did she reach the quarterfinals. Due to a shoulder injury, she canceled her participation in the Fed Cup in April and the WTA tournament in Rome , and later she also renounced the French Open . At Wimbledon she had to give up in the third round against Kim Clijsters when the score was 4-6 and 3-4. Then she also reached the third round at the Olympic Games in London, but was clearly defeated by Serena Williams 1: 6 and 0: 6. After that, she did not take part in any tournament due to injury and slipped to 98th place in the world rankings by the end of the year.
On February 12, 2013, Swonaryova was operated on on her right shoulder. At the beginning of August she resumed training after a year off and announced that she would return soon.
She made her comeback at the WTA tournament in Shenzhen in January 2014. It failed there in round one as well as two weeks later in Melbourne. In April 2015, she played her last match for the time being in Katowice , and in August 2016 she officially announced the end of her career after she had married in the meantime and had become a mother.
She returned to the tour at the end of March 2017. She received a wild card for the ITF tournament in Istanbul , but had to give up her match against Katie Boulter when the score was 7: 6, 8 and 2: 3. In July 2017, she won the ITF tournament in Sharm el-Sheikh , again with a wildcard , in the final she defeated Tereza Mihalíková with 1: 6, 7: 6, 4 , 7: 5. In 2018 she won two WTA tournaments in doubles.

Personal
In addition to her tennis career, Swonaryova studied International Economic Relations at the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Foreign Ministry in Moscow and graduated with a master's degree after six years during her injury-related break in summer 2013. After the temporary end of her active career, Swonaryova married and became a mother in 2016. At the US Open that same year she worked on the microphone for Eurosport .
