Tsvetana Pironkowa ( Bulgarian Цветана Пиронкова ; born September 13, 1987 in Plovdiv ) is a former Bulgarian tennis player .
Career
Under the care of her father, Kiril Enthev, a former rowing champion, Pironkowa began tennis at the age of four. In 2005 she made her sit up and take notice for the first time when she reached the semi-finals on her debut on the WTA Tour in Istanbul , where she had to admit defeat to Venus Williams . In the same year she also reached the semifinals at the WTA tournament in Palermo .
In 2006 Pironkowa was able to establish itself in the top 100 of the WTA world rankings. Her best results included victories over Venus Williams (first round at the Australian Open ) and Anna-Lena Grönefeld (first round at Wimbledon). In Stockholm she reached a semi-finals again.
On June 29, 2010 she celebrated by far the greatest success of her career. As number 82 in the world rankings, she defeated the five-time tournament winner Venus Williams 6: 2, 6: 3 in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon . So she was the first Bulgarian player in the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament ; there she drew the short straw against Vera Swonaryova .
In 2011 she was able to return the favor at Wimbledon. With a smooth two-set win over Swonaryova, she moved into the last sixteen, in which she again defeated Venus Williams. This time she lost her quarter-finals, albeit only after three sets, against the eventual winner Petra Kvitová .
In 2012 Pironkowa reached the round of 16 in Hobart and Doha . In Brussels , Eastbourne and Båstad , she reached the quarter-finals. At the Olympic Games in London, she was eliminated in round two against Flavia Pennetta . At the US Open , she then made it to the round of 16 for the first time, in which she - impaired by a neck injury - lost to Ana Ivanović in two straight sets.
In 2013 she made another good appearance at Wimbledon. After victories over Anastassija Pawljutschenkowa , Mona Barthel and Petra Martić , she was eliminated in the round of 16 against the later semi-finalist Agnieszka Radwańska .
At the beginning of 2014, she was able to play her way through to the final at the tournament in Sydney as a qualifier, which she won 6: 4, 6: 4 against Angelique Kerber - her first title on the WTA Tour. With Kerber in the final, Sara Errani in the quarter-finals and Petra Kvitová in the semi-finals, she defeated three top ten players in Sydney. With this win, Pironkowa returned to the top 100.
Since 2003, she had also played 55 games for the Bulgarian Fed Cup team , including 29 wins.
It had its last international appearance so far in July 2017. Since July 2018 it has not been included in the world rankings.
