Sara Errani (born April 29, 1987 in Bologna ) is an Italian tennis player .
Career
Sara Errani was introduced to tennis by her father at the age of five. In 2002 she played the first ITF tournaments and in 2003 in Palermo her first WTA tournament.
2008 to 2011
In 2008 Errani won her first WTA tournament at the Internazionali Femminili in Palermo , in the final against Marija Korytzewa she had the upper hand with 6: 2, 6: 3. Only two weeks later, the second title win followed in Portorož , Slovenia , where she defeated Anabel Medina Garrigues in the final 6: 3, 6: 3.
In 2009 Errani was back in the final in Palermo, but this time she lost to her compatriot Flavia Pennetta with 1: 6, 2: 6. She also made it into the finals in Portorož, but lost out to world number one Dinara Safina . Also in 2009 she won the Fed Cup with Italy's team . The 4-0 victory over the USA was to be followed by another final victory over the USA the following year - Italy won 3-1 in 2010.
Her best results in 2010 were, in addition to reaching the third round in three Grand Slam tournaments (exception: French Open), the semi-finals in Hobart and Marbella. It was her third season in the top 50 , at the end of the year she finished 43rd.
In February 2011, after a long dry spell , she managed to make it back to the finals of a WTA tournament in Pattaya . At the Australian Open in 2011 there was a first round defeat, in Paris and Wimbledon the end came in round two. In July 2011 she reached the quarter-finals at the tournaments in Budapest and Palermo (placed in position 2 and 3 respectively).
2012
2012 started very well in doubles. After losing the final at the Australian Open , she and her partner Roberta Vinci celebrated two tournament victories in February . Both at the tournament in Monterrey and the following week in Acapulco , the Italian duo signed the list of winners. In Acapulco, as number 3 in the tournament, she won her first title against her compatriot Flavia Pennetta after more than three and a half years. In the semifinals, she previously defeated her doubles partner Vinci in three contested sets. In singles, she then won the clay court tournaments in Barcelona and Budapest. On May 12, she and Vinci secured the title at the tournament in Madrid , Errani's first significant double title, with a final victory over Makarova / Wesnina . On June 8, 2012, she and her long-term partner won the first Grand Slam title with a final victory in Paris against the pairing Marija Kirilenko / Nadja Petrowa . The next day Errani was also in the individual finals, but had to admit defeat Sharapova in two straight sets. With this she climbed to new personal records in the world rankings both in singles (10th place) and doubles (3). With the seventh title win in 2012 a week later in 's-Hertogenbosch and their 15th overall, the Errani / Vinci pairing was the most successful women's doubles of the 2012 season. Errani reached the third round at Wimbledon. In her defeat against Jaroslawa Schwedowa (0: 6, 4: 6), she suffered the historic mishap of handing a set with 24 consecutive points to the opponent, so to collect a so-called golden set . At the WTA tournament in Palermo , she then won the final against Barbora Záhlavová-Strýcová and thus became the first Italian to win four WTA tournaments in one year. At the US Open, she continued her series of successes: semi-finals in singles (1: 6, 2: 6 defeat to Serena Williams) and second Grand Slam title in doubles. At Vinci's side, she defeated the duo Andrea Hlaváčková / Lucie Hradecká 6: 4 and 6: 2 in the final . By winning the title, Errani topped the doubles world rankings and also achieved a new personal record in the singles with position 7.
2013 and 2014
In terms of singles, the year began with a first round at the Australian Open. However, Errani won the Grand Slam tournament in doubles as well as the indoor tournament in Paris and the hard court tournament in Doha. In the singles she reached the final in Paris and Dubai in 2013, but left the place as a loser both times. At the WTA tournament in Acapulco, she was then able to defend her title. At the French Open she reached the semifinals, but had no chance against Serena Williams there. The other two Grand Slam tournaments did not go well either; she was eliminated in round two at the latest. Nevertheless, as in the previous year, Errani was able to qualify for the Masters at the end of the year in both singles and doubles. However, she only won one game in singles and was eliminated in the preliminary round, in doubles in the semi-finals. Nevertheless, she ended the year with a success; in the 4-0 victory over Russia in the Fed Cup final in Sardinia, she won both individual games on clay. Italy celebrated its fourth success in this team competition.
As in the previous year , she failed in round one at the Australian Open in 2014 . In contrast, she reached the final in doubles as in 2013, which she won alongside Vinci. It was her 20th double and fourth Grand Slam title. In the individual, she reached the final at the indoor tournament in Paris , which she lost as in the previous year. In doubles she won with Vinci in Stuttgart and Madrid. At her home tournament in Rome she made it to the finals after defeating Li Na for the first time in the quarterfinals . In the final she injured herself slightly and lost to Serena Williams 3: 6 and 0: 6. She also won the final of the doubles competition with Vinci at Wimbledon . For both it was the fifth Grand Slam title and at the same time the so-called Career Grand Slam ; that is, they have now won each of the four Grand Slam tournaments at least once. You also wrote Italian tennis history with it; because never before could a tennis player from Italy win a title in Wimbledon, neither in singles nor in doubles.
Since 2015
In singles, she was eliminated from the Australian Open in the third round; in doubles came for the defending champion in the round of 16. At the WTA tournament in Rio de Janeiro , she was the top seed and celebrated her first individual title win in almost two years; it was her eighth individual title. At the Grand Slam tournaments, the quarter-finals in Paris was her best result.
The year 2016 began with an opening defeat at the Australian Open . In February she won a tournament in the Premier category for the first time in Dubai ; with this success it temporarily returned to the top 20 in the world.
doping
On February 16, 2017, a routine doping test was carried out at Errani , which was positive; the substance letrozole was detected in her blood . She admitted the violation on the grounds that she had eaten pasta contaminated with her mother's breast cancer drug. On August 3, 2017, it was banned for two months until October 2, 2017. In addition, all results on the WTA Tour from February 16 to the negative test on June 7, 2017 were canceled, which meant that she lost her prize money and world ranking points. Both Errani and the Italian anti-doping public prosecutor's office took action against the judgment before the International Sports Court , which extended the ban to ten months in June 2018. The suspension that had already been served was taken into account, so that Errani was suspended again for eight months from June 2018 to February 2019.
