Jasmine Paolini (born January 4, 1996 in Castelnuovo di Garfagnana ) is an Italian tennis player .
Career
Paolini, whose mother is half Polish , half Ghanaian , plays mainly on the ITF Women's Circuit . So far she has won eight singles and one double title there. As a junior, she gained her first experience in small clay court tournaments in Italy. In 2013 she reached the third round of the women's junior competition at the US Open , as well as at the Australian Open the following year. From the organizer of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome, she received a wildcard for qualification in both singles and doubles in 2015 , but she lost both times in the first round.
In 2016, after losing three finals, Paolini won her first ITF title in a $ 25,000 tournament in Valencia . The following season she took part in all four qualifying tournaments of the Grand Slams for the first time, but could only win a match at Wimbledon . In June of the same year, the Italian celebrated her biggest title to date by winning the Open Féminin de Marseille 2017 . In her first appearance in the main draw of a WTA tournament in Bastad , she could only win a single game against Carla Suárez Navarro .
At the beginning of 2018 Paolini made her debut in the Italian Fed Cup team , but lost again in straight sets against Suárez Navarro in front of a home crowd. In April she achieved her first victory in the main round of a WTA tournament in Bogotá . A little later she reached a WTA quarter-finals for the first time in Prague after missing qualification as a successor lucky loser. At the start she beat Darja Kassatkina, who was third, a player from the top 20 of the tennis world rankings , before she had to admit defeat to Zhang Shuai in the round of eight .
Paolini initially failed to build on this success. At the Internazionali BNL d'Italia 2019 , she came into the main field with a wildcard, where she lost to Sofia Kenin without a chance. Nevertheless, she was able to qualify for the first time for the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament at the subsequent French Open , but she could not repeat her victory against Darja Kassatkina when they met in the first round. By the end of the year, two more WTA quarter-finals followed at the home tournament in Palermo and from the qualification in Guangzhou . Due to good results in higher endowed ITF tournaments at the end of the season, including in Shenzhen and Tokyo , she was able to finish the calendar year among the top 100 in the world and qualify for the main draw of the Australian Open for the first time , but where she failed in the opening round.
Paolini has played a total of eleven matches in singles and doubles for the Italian Fed Cup team since 2017, of which she was able to win four.
