Camila Giorgi (born December 30, 1991 in Macerata ) is an Italian tennis player .

Career

Giorgi started tennis at the age of five and prefers to play on hard courts. As a junior she has no results worth mentioning. Instead, she concentrated early on on the professional tour and in 2006 she played her first tournament on the ITF Women's Circuit . In 2010 she won her first of five ITF titles in a tournament in the $ 25,000 category at Rock Hill . In 2011 she won another tournament in Carson , this time in the $ 50,000 category. This year she played almost exclusively in the USA, she only traveled to Europe to qualify for Wimbledon and immediately reached the peloton in her first official competition on grass; However, lost in the first round clearly against Zwetana Pironkowa .

The following year she started again in the qualification in London and after victories over her compatriot Flavia Pennetta and Nadja Petrowa surprisingly and without losing a set, she made it to the second round, where she first had to admit defeat to Agnieszka Radwańska . At the China Open in Beijing, also coming out of qualification, she succeeded in round one against Sara Errani after giving up the first of nine wins against a top 10 player. In the world rankings, Giorgi moved into the top 100 in the world for the first time thanks to these successes. In 2014 she only competed on the WTA Tour, but was only able to convince at the Grand Slams. So she reached the third round at Wimbledon , in which she was defeated by the eventual winner Marion Bartoli and at the US Open after her biggest win against Caroline Wozniacki to date, her second Grand Slam round of 16.

After she had surprised, especially at larger tournaments, she was in Katowice in 2014 for the first time in the final of a WTA tournament in the international category. But she had to admit defeat there against Alizé Cornet as well as in the final of the Generali Ladies Linz in October against Karolína Plíšková after a hard fight in three long sets. In Indian Wells she also attracted attention with a third round win over Maria Sharapova . By reaching the fourth round, Giorgi finally established himself in the top 50 in the world. In 2015 she reached the final in Katowice again ; But lost there after a semi-final victory over Agnieszka Radwańska against Anna Karolína Schmiedlová in the final with 4: 6 and 3: 6. She was able to celebrate her first title in 's-Hertogenbosch that same year after defeating Belinda Bencic in the final.

A disappointing 2016 followed, however, in which she only made it past the first round at the French Open and also lost in Katowice at the third attempt in the final; this time against Dominika Cibulková with 4: 6 and 0: 6. Their form weakness continued throughout the 2017 season, in which Giorgi only reached a single semi-final in Shenzhen at the beginning of the year . After all, after four consecutive first-round defeats at Grand Slam tournaments in London in 2017 , she once again made it into the third round; there she lost to Jeļena Ostapenko in straight sets. At the start of the 2018 season, she fought her way back to the top of the world after qualifying in Sydney without losing a set after winning against Sloane Stephens , Petra Kvitová and Agnieszka Radwańska , where she only failed to Angelique Kerber . Giorgi achieved her greatest success at Wimbledon when she reached her first Grand Slam quarter-final, in which she was defeated by Serena Williams in three sets. After she had already reached the semi-finals in Tokyo after her third victory over Caroline Wozniacki, she was victorious for the first time in her second final at the Upper Austria Ladies Linz 2018 . In the final, Giorgi prevailed against Jekaterina Alexandrowa with 6: 3 and 6: 1 and won her second WTA title. In 2018, the Italian ended a season in the top 30 in the world for the first time and achieved her best career placement to date with 26th place.

In 2019, the Italian started solidly with a third round in Melbourne . However, wrist problems forced her to suspend the clay court season. After a first round defeat at Wimbledon , she reached two more finals in Washington and the New York Bronx , but lost them to Jessica Pegula and Magda Linette, respectively . Despite the longer injury-related break, she was also able to finish the 2019 season for the seventh year in a row among the top 100 in the world.

As in the previous year, she reached the third round of the Australian Open 2020 and was defeated by Angelique Kerber in three sets.

Fed Cup

Since 2014, Camila Giorgi has played 13 games for the Italian Fed Cup team in singles and doubles and has won five of them (5-7 in singles). In 2016 there was an open dispute between Giorgi and the Italian Tennis Federation (FIT) after the Italian announced that she would rather play in qualifying for the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart instead of representing her country in the world group playoff against Spain . In response, the association's president, Angelo Binaghi, imposed a fine of 160,000 euros on Giorgi and her father, who acted as coach, for breach of contract because they did not fulfill their obligation to represent Italy in the Fed Cup in connection with the care at the national tennis center in Tirrenia . The Giorgis rejected the threat and, for their part, distanced themselves from the Italian Tennis Association, so that Georgi waived her participation in the 2016 Summer Olympics despite successfully qualifying . Only in 2019 Giorgi rejoined the team after a reconciliation, but lost in their comeback against Switzerland in each individual against Belinda Bencic and Viktorija Golubic .
