Yekaterina Evgenjewna Alexandrowa ( Russian Екатерина Евгеньевна Александрова ; born  November 15, 1994 in Chelyabinsk ) is a Russian tennis player .

Career

Alexandrowa, who started playing tennis at the age of six, moved with her family to the Czech Republic in 2006 , where she has had her training center since then. In 2011 she gained her first experience on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour , on which she won her first two professional titles in her new home at the end of 2013. In 2014 she won her first ITF title in the $ 25,000 category in Wiesbaden and competed in Bad Gastein for the first time in the qualification of a WTA tournament, but lost in the first round.

In 2016 Alexandrowa qualified for a main field on the WTA Tour for the first time in Katowice . After an opening win over Klára Koukalová , she immediately reached the second round, in which she was defeated by Camila Giorgi . In Wimbledon , she then started for the first time in the qualification of a Grand Slam tournament and immediately moved into the main round, in which she first defeated Ana Ivanović before she was eliminated in the second round against Anna-Lena Friedsam . Following a final participation in an ITF tournament of the $ 50,000 category in Olomouc , Alexandrowa tried to assert himself in smaller tournaments on the WTA Tour as well as highly endowed ITF tournaments and scored at the end of the season at the WTA Challenger in Limoges , where she won Caroline Garcia in the final clearly defeated, her greatest success to date.

In 2017, after a poor start in Shenzhen and Croissy-Beaubourg, she won two ITF tournaments in the $ 60,000 category in a row, but subsequently had little success on the WTA Tour. Nevertheless, she survived the first round at both the French Open and the US Open and ended the season in the top 100 of the tennis world rankings for the first time . In 2018, Alexandrowa, who is increasingly making a name for herself as a specialist in fast rubbers , only showed her best performances at the end of the year , apart from making it into the final of the $ 100,000 tournament in Budapest , in which she had to admit defeat to Viktória Kužmová . With Jeena Ostapenko in Seoul , she was able to become a player from the top 10 of the world rankings for the first time, advanced to the final at the WTA tournament in Linz as a qualifier, in which she was defeated by Camila Giorgi, and then triumphed by beating Yevgenia Rodina in the final for the second time after 2016 at the WTA Challenger in Limoges .

In 2019 she surprised again, especially on the indoor surface, when she made it to the quarter-finals in St. Petersburg as a qualifier and then reached the semi-finals of the individual competition in Budapest , in which she was defeated by the eventual winner Alison Van Uytvanck , as well as on the side of Wera Swonaryova in doubles won her first ever WTA title. After a mixed clay court season, in which she was only able to convince at the French Open with her first entry into the third round of a Grand Slam tournament, she reached the quarterfinals on grass in Eastbourne and the third on hard court at the Rogers Cup in Toronto Round. After a strong end to the season with two more semi-finals in Seoul and Linz , a round of 16 in Beijing , where she landed the second top 10 win of her career against Simona Halep before losing to her compatriot Darja Kassatkina , and a quarter-final in Moscow , in which she failed to Karolína Muchová , Alexandrowa managed the first jump into the top 50 in the ranking. At the end of the year, she defended her title in Limoges by winning the final over Aljaksandra Sasnowitsch .

At the beginning of the 2020 season, Alexandrowa was in excellent shape and won her first WTA individual title in Shenzhen after beating Jelena Rybakina in the final . Then she came at the Australian Open for the first time in the third round and reached in ST. Petersburg the semi-finals, in which she was only stopped by the eventual winner Kiki Bertens . As a result, before the corona-related end of the season , she achieved her highest world ranking position to date in 25th place.

In 2020 Alexandrowa made her debut for the Russian Fed Cup team in a 3-2 win against Romania , in which she won both individual encounters.
