Darja Sergejewna Kassatkina ( Russian Дарья Сергеевна Касаткина , English transcription Daria Sergeyevna Kasatkina ; born May 7, 1997 in Tolyatti ) is a Russian tennis player .

Career

Kassatkina, who started playing tennis at the age of six, was an excellent junior. In 2014, with a final victory over Ivana Jorović , she won the junior women's competition of the French Open and climbed to third position in the junior world rankings . In the summer she represented Russia at the 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, where she reached the quarter-finals in the singles competition and won silver in doubles with Anastassija Komardina . In the final there they lost to the mixed duo Anhelina Kalinina from Ukraine and Iryna Schymanowitsch from Belarus .

A year earlier, she gained her first experience on the ITF Women's Circuit and received a wildcard for qualifying for the Kremlin Cup in Moscow due to good performance on the junior tour . Following her French Open success, she won her first ITF title in the $ 25,000 category in Telavi in 2014 and made her debut, this time with a wildcard for the main draw, in Moscow on the WTA Tour, where she however against Alison Riske in the first round retired without a chance.

After winning four more titles on the ITF tour in early 2015, Kassatkina first appeared in smaller WTA tournaments in the second half of the year. In Gastein , after her first WTA main draw win against Aleksandra Krunić in the first round, she immediately reached the quarter-finals, in which she was defeated by Sara Errani in three sets. During her first participation in a Grand Slam tournament in New York, she moved up into the main field as a lucky loser, took off Daria Gavrilova at the beginning and advanced to the third round, where she was stopped by Kristina Mladenovic . After winning her biggest title to date in Saint-Malo , Kassatkina reached the Kremlin Cup as a qualifier after a straight two-set win over Carla Suárez Navarro for the first time the quarter-finals, in which she had to admit defeat to Anastassija Pavlyuchenkova in three sets. Then she won the double competition at the side of her compatriot Jelena Wesnina and thus won her first WTA title. At the end of the season, which Kassatkina started beyond the top 200, she was ranked 72 in the world.

At the start of the 2016 season, Kassatkina landed her first win against a top 10 player in Auckland with Venus Williams . When she first participated in the Australian Open , she reached the third round , as did later at the French Open and Wimbledon . Then she achieved her first semi-final on the WTA tour in St. Petersburg after a success over Dominika Cibulková , in which she lost to Belinda Bencic . In Indian Wells , she was then in the quarter-finals of a tournament in the Premier Mandatory category for the first time. Kassatkina also reached the round of eight at the Rogers Cup in Montreal and won her second top 10 victory in the round of 16 against Roberta Vinci . At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro she reached the quarterfinals after victories over Zheng Saisai and Sara Errani, in which she had to admit defeat to Madison Keys . At the end of the year, Kassatkina improved to the top 30 in the world rankings.

In 2017 Kassatkina won her first WTA title in Charleston after a mixed start to the year, giving her final opponent Jeļena Ostapenko no chance. She had previously won her first win against a reigning world number one in the second round of Sydney against Angelique Kerber . At the US Open she reached the second round for the first time after another victory over Ostapenko, in which she was defeated by Kaia Kanepi . Thanks to a strong final sprint with the move into the quarter-finals in Beijing , where she could only be beaten by Simona Halep , as well as her first participation in the final at the home tournament in Moscow , which she lost to Julia Görges , she also finished the 2017 season in the top 30.

The following year Kassatkina had her second success against a number one player in the quarter-finals of St. Petersburg against Caroline Wozniacki , in the semifinals she lost to Kristina Mladenovic . Then she came in Dubai for the third time in the final of a WTA tournament, which she lost to Elina Switolina . However, she achieved her best performance of the season in Indian Wells , where she defeated three top 10 players in a row with Caroline Wozniacki, Angelique Kerber and Venus Williams before she was beaten by Naomi Osaka in the final . In Madrid she reached the quarterfinals after her seventh top 10 win of the year over Garbiñe Muguruza , as well as at the French Open after a round of 16 success over Wozniacki and at Wimbledon , where she was only eliminated from the eventual winner Angelique Kerber. Kassatkina crowned her strongest season so far with the title at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow after she beat Ons Jabeur in three sets in the final . As a result of the success, she moved into the top 10 in the world rankings and qualified for the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai, where she was eliminated in the group stage after defeating Wang Qiang and losing to Madison Keys.

In 2019, Kassatkina could not even begin to match the results of the previous year and fell far behind in the world rankings with a total of nine first round defeats. It was only towards the end of the season that she was in rising form again when she reached the quarter-finals for the second time in Beijing after victories over Aryna Sabalenka and Jekaterina Alexandrowa . The start of the 2020 season also began cautiously for Kassatkina. Before the corona-related end of the season, she was again in a semi-final at a smaller WTA tournament in Lyon , which she lost to Anna-Lena Friedsam .

She made her debut for the Russian Fed Cup team in February 2016 in the game against the Netherlands ; in the 1: 3 defeat she won her doubles on the side of Yekaterina Makarova and thus the only point for the Russian team. Since then, she has played eight singles and doubles for her country, of which she has won five (individual balance 3: 1). In 2013 she won the Junior Fed Cup together with Weronika Kudermetowa and Alexandra Pospelowa . In the final, they beat the team from Australia 2-0.
