Wang Qiang ( Chinese  王 蔷 ; born January 14, 1992 in Tianjin ) is a Chinese tennis player .

Career

Wang, who started tennis at the age of nine, played her first tournaments on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour in 2006 . The following year, she took part in a WTA tournament for the first time in Beijing after she had received a wildcard for qualification from the organizers , but was eliminated in the first round.

At the end of the 2010 season, Wang won her first professional title, two years later she won a tournament in the $ 25,000 category for the first time. In Baku she was able to qualify for the first time for the main draw of a WTA tournament in 2012 and was subject to Mandy Minella in the first round . She then won her biggest title to date in a tournament in the $ 75,000 category in Beijing , which earned her further wildcards for the subsequent Chinese WTA tournaments, from which she, however, could not benefit. In 2013 she started at the Australian Open for the first time in the qualification of a Grand Slam tournament, in which she failed in the second round. She then surprisingly won her first match in the main draw of a WTA tournament in Kuala Lumpur against the then world number ten Caroline Wozniacki , before she was eliminated in round two against Patricia Mayr-Achleitner . Subsequently, she was in the final of two ITF tournaments in the $ 50,000 category, but they both lost.

In 2014, Wang won two ITF $ 50,000 tournaments in succession in Kurume and her hometown of Tianjin , followed by a third in Wuhan a little later . At the US Open she was then able to qualify for the main round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time and, after an opening win over Paula Kania, immediately moved into the second round, in which she was defeated by Casey Dellacqua . Despite a defeat at the WTA Challenger in Ningbo against Magda Linette , she managed to get into the top 100 of the tennis world rankings for the first time at the end of the season . At the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon she won the gold medal in singles after beating Luksika Kumkhum in two sets in the final . The following year, Wang was in the main draw in all four Grand Slam tournaments, but only survived the first round in New York . She also reached the semifinals of the WTA Challengers in Dalian and Hua Hin .

At the start of the 2016 season, Wang made it to the quarter-finals of a WTA tournament for the first time in Shenzhen . After another quarter-finals in Kuala Lumpur, she won 14 matches in a row, back on the ITF tour, winning two titles in the $ 50,000 category in Quanzhou and Shenzhen and another final at a $ 75,000 category tournament in Gifu . At the French Open she advanced to the second round for the first time in the same year and competed for China at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, where she was eliminated in the individual competition at the beginning against Svetlana Kuznetsova . In 2017 Wang achieved a good result for the first time in a European clay court tournament when she made it to the round of 16 in Madrid , but she still celebrated her greatest successes on Asian hard courts. So she won her first big title in Zhengzhou after a final victory over Peng Shuai . Towards the end of the season, further good results followed with reaching the third round in Wuhan and her first appearance in a WTA semi-final in WTA Hong Kong , so that she was able to finish the 2017 season among the top 50 in the world for the first time.

After Wang first scored the fourth round in Indian Wells in 2018 , in which she had to admit defeat to Simona Halep , she came for the first time at the French Open after an opening win against Venus Williams , her first success against a top 10 player since Kuala Lumpur 2013 in the third round. In Nanchang she was able to win her first WTA title by winning the final over her compatriot Zheng Saisai , which marked the start of Wang's international breakthrough. Following a third round participation at the US Open , she made it to the semi-finals in Hiroshima and won her second tournament success on the WTA Tour in Guangzhou after beating Julija Putinzewa in the final. She did not give up a set in the entire tournament and did not lose more than four games in any of the five games. Inspired by her outstanding form, she reached the semifinals in Wuhan , where she finally had to give up against Anett Kontaveit due to exhaustion, and at the Premier Mandatory tournament in Beijing , defeating Karolína Plíšková in each case . She concluded the season with another finals in Hong Kong , where she was able to beat Garbiñe Muguruza and Elina Switolina , among others , before losing to Dajana Jastremska in the final . In addition, she was able to defend her title in the women's singles at the Asian Games in Jakarta in 2018 after a two-set win against Zheng Saisai . Because of the outstanding results in Asia, she received a wildcard for the WTA Elite Trophy 2018 in Zhuhai. There, a win against Madison Keys in a defeat against Darja Kassatkina was enough for her to move into the semifinals due to the better set difference, in which she clearly beat Garbiñe Muguruza. Although she had to admit defeat to Ashleigh Barty in the final , she ended the season in the top 20 in the ranking for the first time.

In 2019, Wang had problems building on the previous year's performance and was only able to prove her class sporadically. So she reached the quarter-finals in Miami , but was only moderately successful in the subsequent clay and grass court season in Europe. At the US Open , she was then for the first time in the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam tournament, after she was able to land her biggest career victory in the fourth round against world number two Ashleigh Barty; in the round of the last eight she had no chance against Serena Williams . She then achieved her highest world ranking to date with position twelve. Even if Wang was unable to defend the points in the Asian tournaments, she also ended this season in the top 30 in the world.

In Melbourne, at the beginning of 2020, Wang advanced to the round of 16 after defeating Serena Williams, in which she was eliminated against Ons Jabeur .

In 2012 she made her debut for the Chinese Fed Cup team in the 4-1 playoff defeat against Argentina . Since then, she has contested 28 singles and doubles for her country, of which she was able to win 18 (individual balance 16: 6).
