Peng Shuai ( Chinese 彭 帅 , Pinyin Péng Shuài ; born January 8, 1986 in Xiangtan , Hunan Province ) is a Chinese tennis player . She celebrated her greatest successes with her two Grand Slam titles in doubles, at Wimbledon in 2013 and at the French Open in 2014 . From February 17, 2014, she was number 1 in the double world rankings for 20 weeks .
Career
Her parents are police officer Ji Jun Peng and his wife Zhang Bing . An uncle encouraged Shuai to play tennis at the age of eight. She later trained at the International Tennis Academy of Alan Ma in Boca Raton , Florida.
Peng Shuai is considered an uncomfortable opponent who is strong at running and fighting. She celebrated her previous titles individually (with the exception of one title at a WTA Challenger tournament) at ITF tournaments. In 2000 she started at ITF level in her Chinese homeland for the first time. She won in Dotham, Prostejov, Shenzhen , Jackson, Changsha, Mumbai, Tianjin and Baotou.
On the WTA Tour , Peng has already reached four individual finals (at the tournaments in Strasbourg, Forest Hills, Guangzhou and Brussels), but she could not win any of them. In 2004 she made her debut at Wimbledon , but was eliminated there in the first round. In the same year (23 August) it was among the top 100 in the world rankings and on 17 January 2005 it was already among the 50 best. In 2010 she won a gold medal in both individual and team competitions and a bronze medal in doubles at the Asian Games . At the Australian Open she achieved her greatest success in a Grand Slam tournament to date when she made it to the round of 16 .
On the other hand, she has already won several top ten players. In 2011 alone, she defeated number 3 seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova in Auckland , 7th seed Jelena Janković at the Australian Open in Melbourne , Francesca Schiavone seeded 3 in Doha and number 7 of the tournament, Li Na, in Indian Wells . And in Brussels, where Peng himself took 8th position on the seeding list in May 2011, she also beat number 3 of the tournament, Vera Swonarjowa , on the way to the final, in which she was defeated by top seeded Caroline Wozniacki . At the preparatory tournament for Wimbledon in Birmingham , Peng made it to the semi-finals, which she lost to Sabine Lisicki 3: 6, 1: 6. In Wimbledon , too , she easily reached the round of 16, in which Maria Sharapova, however, showed herself to be clearly superior and defeated her 6: 4, 6: 2. In August 2011, Peng achieved her best ranking so far in the individual with 14th place. In 2012 she was again in the round of 16 at Wimbledon, in which she lost to Marija Kirilenko with 1: 6, 7: 6, 6 and 3: 6. At the US Open in 2012 she was eliminated in round one against Jelena Wesnina (6: 7, 5 , 1: 6). Things went far better there in 2014 , when she reached the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament in a singles for the first time in her career.
In doubles, Peng can boast 19 WTA tournament victories in addition to her two Grand Slam titles, including three in Rome (Premier 5 tournament) and one at the WTA Championships (2013).
In August 2018, she was banned from the Tennis Integrity Unit for six months and had to pay a $ 10,000 fine, half of which was suspended. She is said to have tried to get her doubles partner to withdraw after the registration deadline at the Wimbledon Championships 2017 . For this, she offered her compensation, which contradicted the regulations.
In the Fed Cup she has played 15 matches for China since 2001. Her Fed Cup record shows 14 wins (ten of which are singles) and eight defeats.
