Prenzlau high altar in modern times

The carved altar made in Lübeck partially survived the Great Fire in Prenzlau in 1945 because it had been walled up in a tower as a precaution. It is back in the brick Gothic St. Mary's Church, which burned down at the time and was rebuilt after 1970 . However, the carved figures on the altar were stolen in 1991. Some of them could be seized shortly afterwards in Lübeck.

The one or the master?

Art history suspects that the carvers and painters of the altar were different people. In terms of carving, the altar differs from works by the Lübeck artists Claus Berg or Benedikt Dreyer, who are otherwise close to it . The carver is also assigned the Laurentius Altar of the Brotherhood of Brewers' Knechte from 1522 in the St. Anne's Monastery in Lübeck . The painting, on the other hand, falls short of the quality, in connection with a classification the emergency name of the also unknown master of the Bützow Altar is often mentioned .
