Lauren Davis (born October 9, 1993 in Gates Mills , Ohio ) is an American tennis player .

Career

Davis, who started tennis at the age of nine, was an excellent junior. In 2009 she reached the quarter-finals in the US Open junior competition ; the following year she won the prestigious Orange Bowl and rose to third place in the junior tennis world rankings .

At the same time, Davis gained his first experience on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour and won her first two professional titles in 2010. In the same year she made her debut on the WTA tour in the qualification for Miami , for which she was awarded a wildcard by the organizers , but lost there in the first round. In 2011, Davis, also with a wildcard, was allowed to start in the main draw of the Australian Open for the first time, where she failed at the start to Samantha Stosur . She also received a wildcard for Indian Wells , but again she was eliminated in straight sets in the first round, as was the case at the 2011 US Open .

After Davis won her first ITF title in the $ 25,000 category in Plantation in 2012 , she achieved her first success in the main round of a WTA tournament against Petra Martić in Indian Wells . At the French Open , she was able to earn her place in the main field for the first time via qualification and immediately achieve her first victory in the finals of a Grand Slam tournament against Mona Barthel , before beating her compatriot Christina McHale in the second round had to give. By moving into their first WTA quarter-finals in WTA Québec and winning their biggest ITF title to date in the $ 50,000 category in Las Vegas , Davis was able to finish the 2012 season in the top 100 of the world rankings for the first time. The following year she triumphed in the $ 100,000 tournament in Midland and reached the third round in Indian Wells as a lucky loser after beating Madison Keys for the first time. Although she failed at the beginning of all four Grand Slam starts, she moved up the ranking.

In 2014, Davis came to Melbourne for the first time in the third round of a Grand Slam, where she lost to Eugenie Bouchard . In Indian Wels she won her first win against Wiktoryja Asaranka against a top 10 player and then made it to the round of 16, where she had to give up against Casey Dellacqua due to illness. After she reached the quarter-finals in Eastbourne as a qualifier and also advanced to the third round at Wimbledon , Davis made it into the top 50 in the world for the first time. The following year she scored her first semi-final on the WTA tour in Auckland at the start of the season , in Charleston she was able to celebrate her second career success over a top 10 player against Eugenie Bouchard before losing to Madison Keys in the quarter-finals .

In 2016, Davis reached her first WTA final in Washington in front of a home crowd, in which she failed to Yanina Wickmayer . Just two months later, she was at the tournament in Québec as a qualifier again in a final, but this time lost to Océane Dodin . The final indoor court season was also extremely successful with another semi-finals participation in Luxembourg and reaching the final of the ITF tournament in the $ 100,000 category in Poitiers , in which they again had to admit defeat to Dodin. Davis was able to take the strong form into the new year and won her first WTA title at the start in Auckland after a final victory over Ana Konjuh on her third attempt. After a disappointing first round defeat at the Australian Open 2017 , she made it to the quarter-finals in Doha and Dubai , in Indian Wells she made it through to the fourth round, where she failed to Kristina Mladenovic . In May she achieved her highest world ranking to date with position 26. The second half of the season was much weaker for Davis, who, despite her rise to the top 30 in the world rankings, was eliminated in the first round at all four Grand Slam tournaments. Although she could not defend the points from last year, she finished the season in the top 50 in the world for the first time.

2018 started promisingly for Davis with the move into the third round of the Australian Open . There she offered the world number one Simona Halep, who after almost four hours of play only had to admit defeat at 13:15 in the final set, a tough fight. Both players set the record for the most completed games in a main round match at the Australian Open. But instead of drawing self-confidence from the performance shown, Davis did not win a single game in the main draw of a WTA tournament for the rest of the year and in the meantime fell to ranked position 250. It was not until November that Davis reported back with reaching the final at a tournament of the WTA Challenger Series in Houston , in which she was defeated by Peng Shuai . At the beginning of the new year she tried to fight her way back into the top 100 via the ITF tour. After she won a tournament in the $ 100,000 category in Bonita Springs , she received a wild card from the American Tennis Association for the main draw at the French Open , where she made it to the second round. At Wimbledon , she failed in the final round of the qualifying tournament to Kristie Ahn , but subsequently moved into the main round as a lucky loser and beat defending champion Angelique Kerber in three sets in the second round . It was her fourth and so far last win against a player from the top 10 in the world rankings. By participating in the second round of the US Open and making it to the semi-finals of the WTA Challenger in New Haven , she was able to finish the season clearly in the top 100 in the world.

In 2014 Davis made her debut for the United States' Fed Cup team in the quarter-final game against Italy . Since then, she has contested three matches in singles and doubles for her country, of which she was able to win (individual balance 0: 2).
