Christina Marietta McHale (born May 11, 1992 in Teaneck ) is an American tennis player .

Career

McHale, who loves to play tennis on hard courts, also competed in swimming competitions as a teenager. She learned to play tennis on the private grounds of an apartment complex in Hong Kong , where she lived with her family until the age of eight.

In 2007 she first appeared in tournaments on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour . As early as 2008, the former number ten in the junior world rankings received a wildcard for the qualifying round of the US Open and the following year from the US Tennis Association even one for the main draw of the Australian Open 2009 , where she played against the Australian Jessica Moore, who also started as a wildcard in the Extension of the third set lost. Then she was able to win the junior doubles competition in Melbourne on the side of Ajla Tomljanović . Due to consistently good performances in the junior division, she was also allowed to compete in the main field in New York and clearly beat Polona Hercog in two sets; in the following match against Maria Sharapova , however, she had no chance. She won her first match on the WTA Tour in Charleston in 2010 , where she first defeated Alla Kudrjawzewa after qualifying and then the world number two Wiktoryja Asaranka after giving up, before losing to Melanie Oudin in the third round . Then McHale surprised at the Premier Mandatory tournament in Cincinnati by reaching the third round, in which she benefited from Nadja Petrowa's task , but clearly lost to Kim Clijsters .

2011 followed by reaching the third round in Indian Wells after a two-set success over Svetlana Kuznetsova and the quarter-finals in Charleston, further good results in front of a home crowd. In May, McHale won her first ITF title as a qualifier in Rome before she celebrated her biggest success to date in Cincinnati with a two-set win in the second round against world number one Caroline Wozniacki . At the US Open she underlined her good form with another success against the top 10 player Marion Bartoli and the first time she reached the third round of a Grand Slam tournament, in which she had to admit defeat to Marija Kirilenko . In the world rankings, McHale rose to the top 50 thanks to consistently good results, which entitled them to participate in the main fields of the largest WTA tournaments.

In the 2012 season she was in the third round of the Australian Open for the first time , reached the quarter-finals at the Qatar Total Open 2012 in Doha and, after another top 10 win over Petra Kvitová, moved into the fourth round of Indian Wells , where she lost to Angelique Kerber in the tie-break of the third set . After further third-round appearances in Paris , Wimbledon and at the Rogers Cup in Montreal, she achieved her highest world ranking position to date with 24th place. At the Olympic Games in London she failed in the first round to Ana Ivanović .

At the end of 2012, a series of eight cross-season defeats in a row as the American rose to the top of the world came to an abrupt end. In 2013 she was the only Grand Slam to make it into the third round of the US Open . Although she reached her first semi-final on the WTA Tour at a smaller tournament in Québec , where she lost to Marina Eraković , she fell well out of the top 50 in the world rankings at the end of the season.

Several years followed in which McHale repeatedly achieved respectable successes without ever being able to match the consistent performances of the 2011 and 2012 seasons. In 2014 she was in a WTA final in Acapulco for the first time, but lost in three sets against Dominika Cibulková . The following year she surprised in Rome when she advanced as a qualifier to the quarter-finals, in which she lost to Daria Gavrilova . In 2016 she won her first WTA title in Tokyo after a total of five three-set matches in the final against Kateřina Siniaková 3: 6, 6: 4 and 6: 4. In addition, she was twice successful in doubles: in Hobart alongside Han Xinyun against the Australian duo Kimberly Birrell and Jarmila Wolfe and at the Tianjin Open together with Peng Shuai against Magda Linette and Xu Yifan .

In 2018 McHale lost in all Grand Slams in the opening round and left the top 100 in the world rankings for the first time since 2011 at the end of the season. The following year, the American reported back after she reached the third round from qualifying in Indian Wells and won her biggest ITF title to date in Cagnes-sur-Mer without losing a set in the final against Stefanie Vögele . After victories in the main fields of Wuhan and Beijing , she finished again in the top 100 in the world rankings in 2019.

In 2010 she made her debut for the US Fed Cup team in the 4-1 quarter-final defeat against France . Since then, she has played ten individual games for her country, five of which she has won. In 2017 she won the Junior Fed Cup together with Kristie Ahn and Sloane Stephens . In the final they beat the UK team 2-0.
