Career

Kirilenko started playing tennis at the age of seven. At the age of twelve she was discovered by Jelena Brjutschowez, who put together a very special training program for her. Less than three years later she was the best in her age group and the second best U-18 player. In addition, she was supported by well-known tennis players such as Evgeni Kafelnikow , Andrei Olchowski and Max Mirny , who also accompanied her to competitions.

In 2002 she was one of the youngest players to win the Canadian Open and the US Junior Open . From September 2002 she played regularly on the WTA Tour . Persecuted by bad luck with injuries, she made little progress in the world rankings at first. In 2005 she won her first WTA title at the Beijing tournament .

In Dubai she achieved a respectable success when she defeated Nadja Petrowa 6: 4, 6: 1, then she lost to Svetlana Kuznetsova in three sets.

In Miami she lost in the round of 16 against the later finalist Marija Sharapova in a high-class match 6: 3, 4: 6 and 1: 6. After the first round in Warsaw (again against Hingis, who demanded everything at 5: 7, 6: 7), the clay court season was quite passable. The following week she was defeated by Justine Henin in the second round of the Qatar Telecom German Open . At the French Open , Anna-Lena Grönefeld was eliminated in the third round, but Kirilenko reached 20th place in the world rankings for the first time.

The second half of the year was worse. At Wimbledon , she lost in round one. This was followed by first round defeats in San Diego , Los Angeles and New Haven . Only in Montreal could she win a match. At the US Open she reached the third round, in which she had to admit defeat to Aravane Rezaï . Another series of defeats followed: in Beijing the defending champion came out in round two, in Seoul as well as in Tokyo and Moscow it was the end of the line in round one, so that she slipped to 33rd position. In Zurich she then moved into the quarter-finals. A week later she had to give up her first round game in Linz due to hip problems and thus ended the season.
